I went out to Madrid for the Spain v England game at the Bernabeu when Heskey was subjected to the monkey chants. I had to take a bus at Heathrow from the gate out to the plane and who was stood next to me on the bus? Sir Geoff Hurst.
I was gutted as that morning I took his autobiography out of my bag as I’d finished reading it. We had a bit of a chat then went out separate ways when we got to the plane.
Anyway we flew over to Madrid and in the arrivals hall he was standing around with some FA people and I took the chance of a photo with him.
A few years later for a birthday present I opened a photo of Sir Geoff and I signed by the man himself. Unbeknown to me he was doing a book signing or something similar at Lakeside shopping centre. My misses found the picture on my camera, printed it out and got him to sign it.
It’s absolutely bloody marvellous.

In the early nineties, I was running sales and marketing for a decent sized housebuilder in the North East. I had a call from a guy trying to sell sales force incentive schemes. It was Mike Hendrick. I didn't say "I don't deal with ex Test cricketers", of course I was happy to fix up a meeting. When the day arrived, I tried to sound interested in his product, but really I just wanted to talk about playing against West Indies in the 79 World Cup Final and similar stuff. We didn't buy his product

Actually met the man in 2006 in cologne during the world cup. Great to talk to. One of the best bits was when when a bbc reporter, whose reporting was causing some grief back home, wanted to talk to some England fans and was politely told to fuck off, talk to those kids over there, they don't lie.
