Sherwood

Anyone watching it?

Very interesting. Covering killings in a Nottinghamshire mining community some 30 years after the miners strike. Plenty of divisions over those that broke the strike and worked and those that didn’t (UDM v NUM) but also interesting mentions about football.

In the first episode there is mention of ‘Notts Forest’ by the former miner from Yorkshire - a deliberate gibe in this Forest supporting community. Then there’s talk in tonight’s episode of Forest playing Barnsley because of the need to have extra police on duty because of the continuing hatred by Barnsley fans of the Nottingham scabs.

Based on a true story in 2004 - more about it here - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0ccq1xy

Leicestershire’s “Dirty Thirty”. Out of the 2,500 Leicestershire Miners at the time only a small band went out and joined the NUM strike action and stuck it till the end. They got their name when a member of the public, being very critical of them, phoned into Radio Leicester and sarcastically called them the “dirty thirty”. That name stuck and they bore it with pride!

We were coming home early one morning on the works bus after working a night shift at the Peugeot car plant at Ryton in Coventry. Just as we came down the slipway of the Hinckley exit of the M69 a police road block stopped us and boarded the bus thinking we were “flying pickets”. We told them in no uncertain terms “No you fuckin’ eejits we are night shift workers and want to be away to our beds if you don’t mind”!

I’m sure I read somewhere that Barnsley fans still chant scabs at forest fans when they play each other.
For right or wrong, there were some communities ripped apart at that time, and wounds are still raw

Sherwood is indeed a tremendous watch, however, artistic license is used to the extreme, it's supposed to be based on true events, and before I go any further I'll name drop to say the writer James Graham is my brothers step-son. The only thing portrayed in it upto yet that actually happened is the murder of Gary Jackson, played by Pete Posthlewaite. In real life Gary Jackson was Froggy. I was gutted he was killed in episode 1 as I was interested to see how Froggy was portrayed, in real life he was a loud mouthed bully, the guy who killed him ( can't remember his name ) was someone who Froggy had bullied for years, he was a bit on the, shall I call it, slow side. Basically after suffering years and years of bullying he snapped.
The 2nd murder, when the bloke killed his daughter in law never happened in Newstead or Annesley, it was in Huthwaite 5 or 6 miles away and was actually a bloke killing his own daughter.

Pete Postlethwaite died in 2011. Alun Armstrong played Gary Jackson.
