Roger Hunt RIP

Just leaves:

Bobby Charlton
George Cohen
Geoff Hurst

We shouldn't forget the squad players still alive. They all eventually were awarded winners medals in 2009.

The oldest member of the squad Ron Flowers. He nearly made the Final, when Jack Charlton caught a cold.
George Eastham. Had to sell his England shirt and other memorabilia, to help fund his daughter's school fees.
Terry Paine. Played against Mexico in the tournament.
Ian Callaghan. Played against France in the tournament.

I liked the comment that Roger Hunt said a few years later.
Sir Alf told him the night before the final that he would start the game………..they were in the cinema at the time.
How times have changed…….

What, just the two of them?

Great player. Low centre of gravity, classy. RIP.

The squad stayed at the Hendon Hall Hotel. Now a care home.
They walked to the Odeon in Hendon, to watch Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.
The cinema has been demolished and is now a retirement home.

So only 15 players ever got on the pitch for the 6 matches? The two above plus Greaves and John Connelly, who I always remember as Kenneth Wolstenholme pronounced his name Con nelly. No subs in those days. The whole 120 mins in 27° heat in old style heavier shirts. Amazing

And the following season started 2 weeks after the WC Final!

I seem to recall that we played WHU at home about 4 weeks after the final, winning 5-4 with 4 world cup winners on the hallowed Filbo turf. Those were the days.
It's ironic that he has died just a few days after that cheating little git Salah beat his Liverpool record of fastest to 100 top flight goals. Very sad

Bit like the team he played for in the mid 60s. Functional, effective, successful but not greatly inspiring. Not dirty like Leeds but not greatly loved. His goal at Anfield in 65 put us out of the cup but in 69 when we won there in a replay he was substituted for the first time and threw a strop. I saw his goals for England in 66. All close range but at least he was on the spot.

[...] and so did Lampard's shot as well..
At least the latter has long been proven incorrect:
