Rise of the Nazis

The Reckoning

Spoiler alert
It’s reckoned that 99% of those culpable of murdering Jewish people during the war have never been brought to trial.

Alice Vansteenberghe was a physician and member of the French Resistance in Lyon. She was the chief medical officer for the Resistance in Lyon. In 1944 she was captured and tortured by the so called “Butcher of Lyon”,Klaus Barbie. She later testified against him at his trial for crimes against humanity.
Vansteenberghe was captured on the street on 5th August 1944. While detained in Montluc prison, she was tortured by the Gestapo, sometimes by its local chief,Klaus Barbie. Her nails were pulled out and she was beaten, resulting in broken fingers and five broken vertebrae which disabled her permanently. She did not give up any information to her captors. She was freed when the prison was liberated on 24th August 1944. With her husband she continued their medical practice after the war.
She stated that as a member of the resistance she “expected the worst but did not complain, but was angered by the torture of non resistance prisoners”.
Alice died peacefully in 1991.

I’ve been watching the whole 4 series. I can’t understand how Albert Speer got away with it despite being one of the chief perpetrators close to Hitler. Any ideas borebage?

Speer was indicted on 4 counts at the Nuremberg war crimes trials. Conspiracy for crimes against peace, initiating, planning and waging wars of aggression, war crimes and crimes against humanity. He basically managed to lie through his teeth about his true involvement in the Nazi regime and it’s crimes portraying himself merely as a non ideological architect with little knowledge of the slave labour programme or the death camps.
3 of the 8 judges (2 Russian and 1 American) wanted him sentenced to death while the other 5 sitting in judgement disagreed and did not. He was sentenced instead to 20 years imprisonment. His own autobiography’s written while he was in Spandau and after his release more or less admitted that he had lied.

He destroyed paperwork that implicated him and made out that he was ‘a good nazi’.

Klaus Barbie managed to go on the run with false identity at the end of the war. When the Americans in their sector eventually discovered him they recruited him as an agent for their Central Intelligence Services to help hunt down communists. They housed Barbie and his family in complete immunity while they employed him.
It was the French authorities, for obvious reasons, who wanted to get their hands on him and bring him to justice. When the clamour got louder and more accusing the American’s got him out to South America on the “rat run”. He lived in Bolivia for many years and even trained the Bolivian secret services in methods of torture against opposition to the junta. He watched from the cell door as a female Bolivian journalist had pencils pushed into both her ears and then hit further in with mallets until her ear drums were perforated,as he had instructed. Bolivia refused to extradite him to France until the junta was toppled and the new government charged him with non payment of a business debt so that they could hand him over to the French. He was tried and sentenced to life imprisonment in 1983 as France had abolished the death sentence in 1981. He eventually died in prison.
When you consider some of his torture methods in Lyon during the war, immersing prisoners heads in tanks of ammonia and then freezing water repeatedly and training Alsatian dogs to have sex with naked female victims as he watched for his own perverted pleasure,it leaves little room for doubt that Barbie was a pitiless, evil “monster” of an unremittingly depraved kind. It beggars the belief of right minded society to understand such horror!

Grim reading that.

He was on course to be a priest. Plans which were derailed, when his father and brother both died.
Instead, unemployed - he joined the Nazi Party.

An interesting person in all of this is John J McCloy. The bloke who refused as US High Commissioner for Germany, to hand Barbie over to the French. His history is very curious. He was an advisor to IG Farben, the manufacturers of Zyklon B gas. He was instrumental in bringing about the building of the Pentagon, the creation of the CIA and was one of the proposers of the United Nations. He ordered the sparing of Rothenburg from bombing. Known at the "Home Town" to Nazi ideologists and a place that expelled Jews in 1938. President of the World Bank.

He was also on the Warren Commission, having been convinced to take part by his old pal Allen Dulles. The bloke who had been humiliated and sacked by JFK. McCoy brokered the findings of the Warren Commission and its conclusion, having been told by Dulles that Oswald was guilty and that should be what the Commission should prove.

In total Barbie had 38 years of freedom after the Second World War. He remained a major player throughout that time...disgusting.

(Yes I used the internet)

Rise of the Nazis I think was in 4 blocks with 3 episodes in each section.
I Just watched the first part of the final 3 episodes ( manhunt ).
Very interesting documentary and well done.

The Cold War meant the curtailing of the hunt for Nazis as the Americans wanted the Germans on their side, most of whom, it seemed, weren't happy about fellow Germans being taken to court and perhaps executed or given long sentences. They made life difficult for any German that did testify against a Nazi. Ex Nazis effectively controlled West Germany for many years post war, it wasn't until 1979 that Germany finally faced up to it's history when the US TV Series Holocaust played a major role in public debates on the Holocaust in West Germany after its showing and its impact has been described as "enormous".

I used Google for some of the above.

Does it mention von braun designing the v-2 and then being nabbed by the USA for their space program.
Another one that got away with it.
without him it's been argued the USSR would've reached the moon first, even though they lost their chief space architect mid 60s and kept it quiet.

Wow. This stuff's insightful. Thank you Tuz. Good job they never lost their chief space architect. Good job.

What I find abhorrent is that evil bastards like Barbie and 1000’s like him basically got away with it. In the case of Barbie and Speer all it seems because of bloody politics. Being kept safe by one ally against another because they were ‘useful’.
What I find strange is how in Speer’s example nobody bumped him off eg Mossad. It completely sickens me.
