RIP Jimmy Greaves

RIP. I remember his goal against us in 1964. First time I went away from a game we’d won talking about a goal scored by an opposition player.

Yes had been ill for a few years from having had a stroke. One of THE greatest strikers in the history of English football. His strike rate was off the scale for years. Sadly as we know got an injury early on ( which nowadays apparently could be sorted) in the 66 WC which ended not only his competition but also his England career due to Sir Alf not picking him again.
Remember going to WHL in 67 to watch us play there. He took us apart that day. We weren’t the first or the last. RIP

The BBC have described him as a World Cup winner. Surely some mistake?

Jimmy got a medal retrospectively in 2009, after Blatter decided that all squad members from 1930-74 should be awarded one. I subsequently wrote to Blatter asking for a medal as well, seeing as I’d watched the match live on the telly in the East Midlands. At first FIFA dismissed my claim. I went to arbitration and lost on a technicality. I eventually persuaded FIFA to change their minds, with a postal order and a Stamped, Addressed Envelope.

RIP Jimmy.
I loved the story about him that when anyone asked him for directions in London he used the local pubs as a guide from A to B

This was off the back of more recent tournaments where unused subs / squad members were awarded medals even though they never played in the match.

Privileged to have seen him live even though he bloody tore us apart !

The only player like him I think was Lineker.

His humour was top notch too. Naturally funny and his double act with St John was perfect.
My favourite was when West Ham started signing a few foreigners in the 90’s.

‘I tell you what Ian, things have changed since my days at Upton Park. We all used to get there on the District Line. Nowadays they’re more likely to arrive on the Orient Express’

The pair talking about a new book on the 1986 World Cup on the Saint and Greavsie show.

Ian St John: "Is there anything about us in there?"....Greavsie: "A little piece, not much".....Saint: "What about Mick Channon?".....Greavsie: Dunno know Saint, haven't got to the W's yet" A great man RIP

RIP Jimmy a truly world class centre forward and decent fella always entertaining as a footballer and pundit...☹️. I think he scored more league goals against Leicester City than any other club.

To put into perspective how good he was to some of our younger viewers. He scored 357 English top flight goals with just 12 of those being pens. Shearer, by far the PL top scorer, got 260 goals but 57 of those were pens. He basically scored 70% more goals not including pens than anyone else in history. Unbelievable

In these days of ultra intensive diets I liked the story of him and Terry Venables meeting up for pie and mash before the game.

He was so good it was a joy to have seen him play. RIP
