Rice Memorial Bowl

Our bus pulled in the yard at Botcheston and first thing we saw was a group of lads out beating carpets over a clothes line.
My year played them on the bottom pitch and when the ball went sailing over the hedge the ref blew his whistle, told all his own lads to stand still and said "one of the Burbage lads can go and fetch that please".
Biscuits and squash inside afterwards was like a scene out of Charles Dickens!

We called it Desford Bad Lads
Played them a couple of times, half our team didn't want to play, some got mysterious injuries that recovered very quick. To be fair they were dirty bastards, but a decent team as well. I played a couple of games against Glen Parva Borstal as well but at that time we were piss heads recovering from the night before and they were as fit as fuck, and once again some good players.

My nephew came through with Joe Mattock and Lee Cox two lads who have had decent pro careers and he was the stand out player, my nephew, but hes a twat and spent half of his life from14 in nick. A lot of potential top sportsmen didn't of a career becouse of going down the wrong track. Actually he was that good a sportsman when he came out Tigers had him training with them even though he didn't know the rules of the game.

We had a good run with Newry Junior.
Linwood have always been known as the best school team in Leicester really, Newry being your training ground eh ! Ronnies just left my house by the way T. We were talking about playing in the Borstal, and the inmates shouting out the windows "wankers" "fuck off" and stuff, our reply was, we're going for a booze now, what are you doing today :D

Playing for Fairfield, we came up against all of the Welland Valley village teams too. At Hallaton the slope was so steep that cheeses and slices of hare pie used to hurtle past you as you kicked up the pitch. Scored my debut goal in the second minute of our first game of the season there, barely touched it and the slope did the rest.

For those born late 60s/early 70s, if you had a game against St Johns in Stoneygate, you had a professional Div 1 referee in charge - John Hunting, his lad was captain at SJ. Remember being impressed that he had full ref kit on. In my defence, I was only 10.

Fairfield Wigston ? If so we used to have massive matches on the Ecky park Fairfield v Monsell, we always won (50 aside). The street teams on the Monsell was brilliant in them days as well.

T do you remember the summer sunday league we had, The Invoice, the Tiger, the Midland and the City Arms.

When I was at junior school, late sixties/early seventies the early stages of the Rice Bowl was played in Areas, our nemises was always Albert Road of Hinckley , we never made it through to play city or county teams. Anyone remember The Area Sports and The County Sports?
I remember both Micky. I won the Area under 15's triple jump and second in the County, just missed out on going to the All England.

I was at Dixie, Market Bosworth - not sure where Areas or County were held but Abingdon / Bushloe in Wigston rings a bell.

We had this lad called Ian Blomquist, huge powerful boy, I'm sure he won the Area/County sports in the long jump and was second in Discus. when we were at the Junior School he jumped out of the pit

l went to Abington (occasionally) and 3 teams were pretty equal, they were us Bushloe and Gartree. I missed an open goal v Gartree once due to forgotting my boots and having to play in someone elses plimmies 2 sizes too big, thats my excuse anyway. We also played Bushloe at the last game of the season and Bushloe had been in the papers as the best team in the area as they won every single game all season. The whole of both schools watched it, and l missed another nailed on goal, but we won and burst their bubble. I still use that game to wind my mate up who played for them, he says he can't remember it ! hes a liar ! He went on to play a game or 2 for Peterborough, to be fair they had some good players.
It was Abington for me as well..Great times.

l hated it to be honest, didn't go that much. I broke the school record for detentions one turn but a really talented took the title the next term by one. What years was you there Greefox ?

Bloody hell. I thought this thread was about tomorrow's game. Figured Declan Rice's injury was worse than the media thought and they were really upset.

My Dadā€™s uncle was headmaster at Dixie Grammar School. Dr Arnold Burrows.

We won it in 1971 (Scraptoft Valley). I was at the final (vrs Caldecote, if I remember rightly), but too young to be selected that yearšŸ˜

He must have been the one before Bill Gosling, headmaster when I started in 1961 - real old school, feared (but respected) by all. He was replaced on retirement by his polar opposite, a liberal left wing academic before the operation was transferred to Desford as a Comprehensive school in 1969, the year I left.

The old building in Market Bosworth is now home to a fee paying school, also called Dixie Grammar School. I didn't appreciate when I went to school there just what a nice place Market Bosworth is!

1982-84 then onto Gutho....

a while after me then, you may have been there with 2 of my cousins who played football at Abington and Gutho, Gary Marvin and Cary Davies.
I was indeed same year as Gary good footballer ...think Cary was a year older...What years were you there

same year i'm sure, i've seen photos of them both in the same team. Cary's lads both play for Forest. Ones represented England and one Wales. Gary captained Leicestershire schools at football and rugby, he was also the second faster 400 metre running in th Midlands, which made him the second best sportsman in our family, as tell him :D Cary played in goal by the way. l was there 10/11 years before.

Played in goal for Overdale got beaten by a team that Peter Shiltons brother was playing for, lost one nil covered in mud freezing cold, got home and my Dad made me stand in a bowl of cold water on the lawn and washed me down before my mum would let me the house to have a bath. Happy daysšŸ˜‚
