Prof Van Tam proper fan of Boston Utd

Great article on BBC Sport about the Prof. Another good reason to believe him over anything fluffer Johnson tells you.

Having attended hundreds of games at York Street, Prof Van-Tam was determined to secure a piece of history when Boston left their old ground in 2020 for the sparkling new Jakemans Community Stadium, which has been built to Football League standard.

"I've had a small extension built on the family home which serves as our sports bar," he adds. "It has a little bar and a 65-inch telly specifically for watching sport. It's the room where all my signed Boston United shirts and match balls are.

"What I really wanted was a turnstile from York Street to put in the doorway so you clicked through it to get to the sport.

"But they weren't for sale and some members of the family were having absolutely none of it in any case.

"But I did manage to get a Sports Bar sign from outside the ground in a charity auction. That is now inside my sports bar above the telly. It's a piece of York Street in my house."

He’s been the one piece of fresh air in those awful briefings. A true footie fan in every respect supporting his local team not one of the usual suspects 100’s of miles away. I loved his answer to being asked if he was invited onto the Boston board. I’d think about it for 1/2 second before saying yes. A real fan.

Having spent many of my early years living in the metropolis that is Boston and being a former pupil at the same school, I have a very soft spot for United. Seeing the place get some national love via the good Doctor brings a smile to my face. Surreptitious placing of matchday programmes in the background of his Zoom calls and wearing the club tie during the briefings was very uber-fan.

All a bit odd. The York Street ground is owned by the Malkinson family, who ran the club for decades, but apparently the stands were owned by Boston United. The mixed ownership was one of the main reasons that they's been looking to relocate for 15 years. I assumed that a central location was prim development land and would be sold for housing but another club, "Railway Athletic FC" are now playing there. I intend to take a trip to the new ground in the next few weeks. Hopefully there is enough parking, but I will miss the trip to chippy and 5 minute stroll pre-match.
Loved York st, bang in centre of town, new one long way out.

Our family are originally from Boston. My dad used to follow them home and away in the 50s until he got his hand trapped in a railway carriage and stopped following them away. York Street was a great ground, the new one isn't walkable from the town centre but its a great setup all round. Not much around it but the bar is great and it's a good place to watch footy.
