Perhaps We Got A Bit Above Ourselves?

We were never gonna be a Top 6 BCC permanently.
The best we could ever do is crash into the Top 6 for a while - before sliding back down to our usual place in the general scheme of things.
I thought we would get relegated under Claudio the year after we won it.
And then again under Puel.
But we didn't and we've gone back up into the upper reaches.
But for us nothing is forever.
Won't be a problem.
The barmaid in the boozer in the Beeswing in Kettering still won't have any drawers on.
The piss stains from Glosfox's shoes will still be on the patio at that Orient pub.
All will be well.

I am not sure we did.
What we want is, for any given level of budget available via our owners:
That the team plays a brand of football that the supporters can really enjoy
That we are not afraid to have a go at the best teams in whatever league we are playing in, even if we lose
That more than 50% of our recruits match or exceed expectations on arrival ie that the Fofanas outweigh the Vestergards
That we have a steady trickle of Academy lads breaking into the first team squad

Our wage bill suggests that we have gambled a bit in the last three years in trying, and very nearly succeeding, in reaching the CL. Is that getting above ourselves? No, it's having a proper go. But now a period of retrenchment is probably necessary

And low and forget the beauty barmaid with the fantastic condiments at Watford away.

Or coffee at the Withdean.

The futures bright and it’s coming home.

I hope we were never going to be a BCC – even temporarily!
Doesn't it stand for Big Cunty Club??

When Vichai and Top took over we were in the Championship, and I recall them stating that top 5 in the Prem was the target. I laughed at that, yeah yeah I thought, no chance.
By our historic standards, they didn't pussy foot around. The money spent and the standard of players brought in were on a scale that I don't thing any of us have seen before.
Although the achievements surpassed the wildest expectations, I certainly think they created a very good top flight club. Totally and utterly worthy of its place. Admired throughout, a brilliantly run club which connected with both the fans and the community.
I was convinced we were here to stay. Not necessarily staying and competing with CL positions, but a club where the R word was a thing of the past.
Vichai's death left a massive whole in the club, but Top acknowledged that he wanted to continue his father's legacy, and for a while you couldn't notice the sad transition of power.
However it appears issues have arisen well before this summer's total paralysis in the transfer market. For two seasons running with CL beckoning, and almost impossible to throw away, the club failed to rubber stamp this gift by shunning the market. Ryan Bennett was the only addition in one of those failed attempts.
When you consider the pot of gold awaiting in the CL it was somewhat surprising they didn't push the boat out more to claim a fantastic achievement.
Fast forward to today and we seemed to have reached a stage where we don't have a pot to piss in. I have read posts such as Soho's and others who I initially thought were just posting for a reaction, and basically dismissed them as being drama queens. I actually think now though that those opinions are somewhat far nearer reality then I dared to fear.
Sunday's bewildering management in the Brentford game, raises serious questions about where we are.
It's concerning where we are going at the moment. I think with what we have we are capable of sneaking top half, I also think with certain circumstances we are also bottom 6 material.
We look hopelessly weak in central defence if Fofana isn't playing. Both Evans and Vardy are at the cliff edge of their top flight careers.
If Vardy can play a reasonable part this season, I'd hope it will be enough to see us comfortable.
The problem is with no new signings, you can't hide it from the fans. It's starting to look like the club are desperately trying to cling on to the last knockings of our greatest era.
It feels like more of our best assets are about to be prized away, and we don't have the scouting structure to bring us such gems as Kante, Mahrez, Fofana, Madders etc.
Soho says that nothing lasts forever with us.
I didn't believe that until recently, but whatever happens nobody can take away some incredible years, years in which we turned heads, shocked, entertained, pulled out a miracle and triumphed.
I just want it to carry on, and that's why I am often negative about us, it's simply the fear of returning to mediocrity, to being insignificant, to being just another club.

Remember Leeds spent big to chase the dream and paid for it for the next 20 years.

Great post @Brauny.

You said “was convinced we were here to stay. Not necessarily staying and competing with CL positions, but a club where the R word was a thing of the past.” You should have added “apart from @Sohofox.” 😆

I do understand why many are negative about the situation and on the face of it it really doesn’t look good. I try to remain positive at all times and I usually only deal in facts and things that I can affect. The fact is that we are in the dark about what is actually going on at the club. I feel my loyalty deserves a little better and a statement of some kind to explain the situation even just a little bit would be welcome.

Whatever the situation is, there is nothing I can do to affect things.

Like you I think we have enough this season to have a reasonable campaign. Do I want better? Hell yeah. But if not we’ll go again next season with a new head of recruitment. My god we’ll need him on the top of his game.

We're not "in the dark", why does this or similar keep popping up like whack-a-moles? It's been said, clearly: We can't buy until we sell. We can't sell because the ones we want to sell are unsellable (i.e, they're on too long contracts with too high wages for their skills and commitment and aren't going to let go of that pot of gold - and no other clubs want them anyway. We've now got to balance the books and keep them that way.
I get the impression some on here expect Top and the club's accountants to arrange so that all who've been "kept in the dark" can go through the books with them. FFS, get real, stop shutting your eyes and sticking fingers in your ears. It's been made clear enough already. That's all we need to know - unless of course there's a rock solid conspiracy theory I don't yet know of. AAAAARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!

I thought after those couple of Seasons would have given us a platform to carry on upsetting the hierarchy
I thought with 3 additions two at the back and a winger we could carry on where we left off and I still believe with the right tactical management we could still cause some trouble but I do believe the effects of not securing a place in the Champions league has had an adverse effect on the club both on the aspects of playing and management of expectations, had gone been better we would be looking at a top 6 side instead of seeing this decline.
Hope for future and present supporters this is only a blip

Mick - us Old 'Uns can't say its been all boring following City.
We've had our ups and downs but there have been teams and football to treasure over the last 75 years for you and 55 years for me.
Even the bad times have had their moments to look back on with pride.
Neither of us could have dreamt we'd win Premier League and FA Cup within a few short years.
And that Champions League tour of the hot spots of Europe in 2016/7 was totally surreal.
Following City has been like all our lives - loads of disappointments mixed in with some tremendous highs and a fair bit of boredom. But c'est la vie.
I wouldn't have changed it for the world (well maybe Frank McLintock, Taylor and Holloway as managers but not much else).
Great memories and lots to be pissed off about. Just like life.

Covid also contributed to a more cautious transfer approach due to limited incoming funds, [over three Business streams OL, KP & LCFC. its no surprise Top is trying to balance and safeguard the future of his assets. its just unfortune that its affecting the development of LCFC, however he doesn't control daft decisions as taking KDH off and only making one sub.

Soho, Brauny and Kendall all pretty much say the same thing which is that the club has reached the peak of any sort of journey that it is on.
They talk of the top six as some sort of impenetrable elite which clubs our size can never join.
As things stand this is true. And had the club genuinely set out to achieve that goal then clearly it is not likely to happen on a sustained basis.
So 15/16 was a one off. But we should remember that our present playing staff is light years ahead of that which took the title.
So whilst a permanent top six position is unlikely we can still upset the elite.
The basis of the views stated seems to be the present state of 'out of balance' financial situation represents the start of a slide to mid table or worse but as this is sorted, as it will be, we will go again..
BR had his finger on the pulse at the end of last season when he saw the need for a renewal of staff to counter institutional complacency.
That it didn't happen does not mean he was wrong.
The apparent determination to retain Madds and Wes suggests no crisis, the only fly in the ointment is failing to sell a reluctant YT.
So, I think we are just pausing and can resume the aim to upset the prevailing order.
As I said the other day four of the top six are in disarray at the moment and looking far from comfortable. Keep the faith!

George I wouldn't have swapped it for the world as you say its been one hell of a roller coaster ride just hope the young us don't take things for granted. Leicester City have always had to work bloody hard to achieve anything, never envied the big boys got my own back when we gave some of them a taste of their own medicine. Met some good lads along the way as well, what's not to like about it, I'll miss seeing everyone but time marches on .

Yep, us old'uns remember that none of the good times lasted forever, and that we're never going to be glamour for years on end, best we can do is what we did do, now try and rebuild and do it again. And try to get hungry players and good coaching. The owners have done amazing things, but obviously there are now some difficulties, it happens. It has been the most fantastic few years though, and no reason we'll not have more if we remember who we are, not entitled, but a proper football club.

I understand what you're saying. However, given the fact that the club has managed to break into the top six on three occasions in recent seasons suggests that 15/16 cannot be said to have been a "one off" in that context.

I'm also not sure you are right to say that 4 out of the assumed top six are in disarray at the moment. I would suggest that only Man Utd appear to be in that state - although others are certainly in the early-to-mid stages of 'adjustment'...

You say that we are not in the dark, yet BR only months ago declared the club needed a refresh.
Seems then that the manager was oblivious to any financial issues.

As I said before, personally I would expect that the club hierarchy would talk through with the manager the high level position for upcoming season(s) based on performance in current season. Whether they did or not, who knows. Whether they did and BR thought that he could force the issue by mentioning it thinking it might loosen purse strings. who knows.

Regardless, we know now that the club's position is that it needs to reduce costs or bring in extra income before it can consider refreshing because of Premier League rules. Now, maybe when the figures that will come out early 2023 when the accounts for 2021/22 are released will show that they are being extra cautious but I would suggest that what we know - previous years accounts with subsequent player movements - would indicate it might well be entirely realistic.

Perhaps I haven’t now got the same aspirations as some. I see it like this since my first game in 1965.

1). Have seen some of the greats play for my club. Banks,Shilton,Weller,Worthington,Lineker, Vardy etc. Loads of other notables like Gibson, Whitworth, Walsh, Izzet, Kanté Cambiasso Kasper etc etc.

2). We’ve normally over the years been a yo yo club. Hopefully that’s now ended. In my time we’ve won 2 LC, 2 CS, PL and FA Cup. Been in Europe 6 times playing in over 14 countries.
3). World class training ground and will have a 40000 stadium soon

I could go on and on. But all I know is I’ve friends who’ve supported their clubs for similar years as myself and have won little.
Sunderland 1x cup and just 2 matches in Europe.
Newcastle 1 Fairs cup.
West Ham. 1x FA Cup
Stoke 1x LC
Middlesbrough 1x LC
Everton Since 1970 1x league, ECWC and 1x FA Cup
Palace Nothing
Norwich 1x LC
WBA 1x FA Cup 1968
Wolves 2 x LC (1970’s)
Cov 1x FA Cup

Let’s not even bother with a lot of others like F^**% Villa Leeds Blackburn etc who’ve generally done nothing for over 30/40 years.

I’m living the dream thank you. I will die football wise very very happy that my local club have given me this happiness.

Finally I’ve always been grateful that I wasn’t born football wise in Burnley Plymouth Bristol Peterborough Luton Sheffield etc.
Things evolve and we’ll do more than ok I’m sure and I hope with the expansion of the ground, the new generation of fans in Leicestershire not only support us, (and not a plastic) but are able to go, watch and enjoy what we have over the years.

Up the City 💙🦊⚽
