Perez

Those to be released will have been informed some time ago so today was probably about impressing a future employer...
Of course if they are still in contract they may refuse to cooperate...

Don’t think they’ll be releasing someone they paid £30m for and has a year left on his contract. Would cost £80,000 a week x 52 to get rid of him.

I know I’m in the minority but I like Pérez. He will accept the ball in tight positions, can hold it well, and can see and play some killer balls. Can finish too - but needs to get in the box more and show that.
When everyone is fit it is hard to find a place for him - but if want to play someone up front with Vardy as part of a two he’s in with a shout in my view, above Ian Nacho and Daka

I too think he's beeter than he is painted on here but I don't think he would be in our best XI. His position is one that needs investment

The problem with Perez, and my Geordie mates say the same.

He's never been played in his correct position. When Newcastle first bought him he played as a number 10 and thrived, he was getting better and better. Then for some reason he was dumped on the wing, where he was decent but in a shit team.

Moving here should have been a catalyst, but like many under Rodgers seems to have stagnated.

(y) He's had a few bad performances, but I think he is much better people are saying.

I don’t disagree with that other than to say that sometimes Rodgers does play him in the right position - this seems to occur when we do see him in the box more. I see him as an old style inside forward - if we’re seeing Maddison as a number 10 perhaps Pérez is a number 8.
What Rodgers has done with him, as he’s done with others (especially Barnes and Lookman) is to expect more from them when we’re not in possession - tracking back, covering space, and that’s when it appears Pérez is often offering less rather than more.
More managers demand that these days - Pep is a typical example of how he’s expected it from Mahrez and Grealish, whereas Ranieri wasn’t too bothered about Mahrez tracking back with a stay at home full back behind him, and Smith at Villa just wanted Grealish to be a playmaker.

He formed a really good understanding/ partnership with Ricardo on the right hand side. The last goal on Sunday is a good example.

Ricardo's injury had a huge impact on Perez's form.

I'm surprised to see he 'holds it well' as he is routinely dispossessed.
He reads a game well but is let down by technical shortcomings. Another finding the pace of our league a bit tough?

I am also surprised by the claims in here that A, B or C is not played in his 'best position'. If indeed a manager has
not really spotted a 'best position' which I find unlikely then it must be that somebody else is doing their well job there.

Perez is really a fringe player in a top eight club, which is an important role but we cannot afford decent pay
for benchwarmers like the top six. And half decent players will not be happy with that role anyway.
Adios...

Pérez actually is a fringe player at a top 8 club - that’s what he is and that’s what we are.
You appear to be saying for our squad players we can’t expect to have, or afford, half decent players?
Are you really suggesting we can only afford 11 regulars and have to expect the other 11 are going to be less than half decent.

That's nor exactly it but close. I think the reality is that there are three sections to the Prem.
The wealthy top six; those that for them they are at the top of their expectations and regard the Prem as a place they are lucky to be and a middle area of clubs who never really expect to be in any other league.
The big six don't hope to win stuff, they expect to. They are built to compete in a 58 match season for which they need a sizeable fringe who would walk into most other Prem clubs. They are happy to be there because the big boys can afford to pay them decent money to back up key players.
We cannot do this. Our 'fringe' being modestly paid, will ask themselves if they can play regularly and be paid a bit more with other clubs.
I think AP is in this group with the likes of Hamza, Ward, Ian, Soumare, Vest and RyanB. They know that if certain players are fit they will not get a start. I think this is the group BR will want to refresh.
So our fringe of age 25+ players is less likely to be happy than those at the big six. This does not apply to the lads like Thomas, Lookman and Saka who can rightly target a first team place here.

Saka? Didn't know we'd signed him.
