In sure the CBI would be in favour of keeping them out

The CBI are just an expensive talking shop, no one takes any notice of them except the media

Yes but it shouldn't be their main focus
Not sure if it is. Pretty sure low low level stuff is sorted at branch level etc. Of course the bigger stuff is going to attract news. Although they should attempt to influence more on workers rights than other rights. They have their own bodies and systems for that.

It’s becoming clear that Russia billionaires with dodgy offshore accounts and half the property in London own the party once known as The Conservatives and much of current government policy reflects that.

How can it not be their main focus?
Trade Unions were formed to protect worker rights and conditions.
Which puts them in direct opposition with those who control companies and their minions in government.

These days I rather suspect it is their only focus. It is a way into politics in general and the Labour Party in particular for those 'involved', an easy life on the political graveyard train.

I would be surprised if the wellbeing of their members even enters the heads of many of the officials especially as they climb the 'greasy pole'.

The wellbeing of their members, make the politics paramount.
Otherwise there would be no point...
How else can a Union function, if it doesn't engage politically?

It was that attitude that brought the downfall of the unions and the Labour government in the seventies

Most of this can be dealt with at local level it doesn't need layers and layers of bureaucratic bull shit on either side

Politics doesn't just exist at national level.
Might not be explaining myself properly.
By politics, I mean the interaction between people, with differing views - seeking a common ground, through negotiation.
Rather than the murky politics of self-interest at all costs...

By being more supportive of their members in everyday work related matters. The politics may be important but my experience suggests that it is the kind of everyday difficulties and disputes that matter most to members.

Just seen your second post, yes agree with that, the way it has been phrased, semantics again.

I basically agree with you but remember the unions only represent a small amount of workers and I would much rather they do their best for them rather than pontificating on a grand scale and preaching to the converted

In my experience at local level most managers and shop stewards are pretty decent and sensible people it's only when the table thumping loons get involved that it goes down the shitter

This thread exemplifies how the elite who are the subject of The Pandora Papers get away with the huge scale of corruption.

It has descended into a squabble about Union power, something that with their demise spelled the death knell to any hope of a more equal distribution of wealth, certainly in this country

An estimated 7 to 8 $Trillion has been amassed by this Elite in offshore accounts, enough to cure many of the worlds' ills.

But hey, Them wicked Unions eh ?

Not sure anyone has slagged unions off, it was more a discussion about party financing

In the UK we have a problem in that we are attractive to the super rich who in some circumstances have amassed their wealth through what we think are unacceptable means. We have no control over how these people behave outside of the UK, we need to decide if we should allow them to spend their ill gotten gains here or abroad

Don't forget that the Leicester City owners are pretty unpopular in their own country

Makes you think though …..
Our governing party is largely funded by citizens of a foreign power that wishes us no good .

Are you sure it’s “largely” funded by foreign citizens?. Which ones wish us no good?, we need to know this.
