On a lighter note my other half has decided it's time to get back into the swing of things and booked us seats for 2 ballet/contemporary dance performances at Sadler's Wells. Thoughts and prayers much appreciated.

I was in a similar position a few years ago when MrsFG booked to see The Red Shoes - Mathew Bournes production

Have to say it blew me away / absolutely loved it. One of my most memorable nights in a theatre .

Followed it up with more standard production of Swan Lake and was bored silly

Be interested in what you think .

She's a bit ambivalent about Matthew Bourne, doesn't like his versions of classic pieces but thinks his contemporary stuff is ok. We're seeing an Akram Khan thing based on Frankenstein and a double-header by Hofesh Schechter (who to be honest I have never heard of) and I am actually looking forward to them, sort of.

Have just noticed the blurb for the Schechter says it's a piece "where violence, tenderness and hope are all laid bare", so spending a bit of time on this forum is probably good prep.

I shall get out the tea lights.

Not been to Sadlers Wells in a very long time, ENO the last time.
Never been to Sadler's Wells which seems odd. I've more often than not been a bit disappointed by ENO productions (I've only seen opera there). We tend to go to Covent Garden for opera (or Leeds Grand Theatre of course).

Indeed, Mozart in English was not a good choice, might explain why I have not been back in rather a long time.

Could this be the seed that one day flourishes into "Bentleys Roof - The Opera"? A modern day tragedy in three parts, all of them sweary.

I was about to say that 'Street Scene' might provide the right template (not too much of a pure opera etc) but to be fair that blurb would fit just about any opera I've seen

Last visit to the opera was here...

Aspendos festival, some Hayden and, for the lols, Puccini. Which turned out to be good fun, hissing and booing at Scarpia.

Wonderful open air setting in a Roman amphitheatre.

In Eastern Europe, ballet and all that, is for the masses.
When I worked in Bratislava I paid the equivalent of 50p for best seats in the state opera house. My flat was owned by a Slovak opera singer whose name I can never remember but who Slovak colleagues said was like the 4th tenor.

I have no idea why people think the working class can't enjoy the arts?
It’s a sort of inverted snobbery . The Fast Show did a great skit on it with 3 guys sitting fishing talking about Opera . Can’t seem to find it .
Shakespeare wrote very much for the ’‘groundlings’

Bent -how did you live this long being ignorant about pretty much everything ?

It’s an achievement in itself to be terminally wrong in every utterance. Few would manage it even by random accident . 😂😂

This reminds me of the thread Mac started on one of the old boards, something like "Ever replied to the wrong thread?". It was absolutely hilarious. Second funniest thing I ever saw here.
