Nazi era warships exposed by the drought conditions…..

Knife & Fork pending
……dozens of Nazi warships have now appeared in the low waters of the Serbian section of the Danube,Europe’s 2nd longest river. Part of the German Navy’s Black Sea Fleet scuttled in September 1944 in an attempt to hamper passage for the advancing Russian Forces. Lying unseen on the bottom for over 82 years they are now reappeared into view!

They all still contain explosives.
Think of the SS Richard Montgomery, a US Liberty Cargo ship, sunken since August 1944 in the Thames Estuary. It dragged its anchor and partly broke apart on the Nore Sandbank near Sheerness,Kent. It left behind the cargo of 1,400 tonnes of live WWII munitions including cluster bombs and high explosives. It still has a permanent exclusion zone around it and is closely monitored via sonar by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
A £9.5 million engineering project is scheduled to remove the ship’s protruding metal masts to reduce structural stress on the decaying hull.
Roughly 14000 sensitive detonators are still in the hull and at the danger of corrosion and instability. Some of the dangerous cargo was also phosphorus explosives. The official line of the Government authorities is that of “non interference”.
In 1967 a similar but smaller sunken WWII explosive cargo ship the Polish SS Kielce finally exploded off the coast near Folkestone causing a huge 25 metres crater on the seabed and a 4.5 magnitude earthquake!
The wreck of the SS Richard Montgomery is in very close proximity to the coastal town of Sheerness, only 2 miles from the Isle of Grain and its vast liquified gas containers and close enough to Southend to cause unimaginable damage should the worst ever happen!

At a distance of only 23 nautical miles (as the Seagull flies) then the repercussions of any explosion might even be felt in Clacton. Where the “newly elected” local MP there might find that the “hole blown” in his £5 million “security gift” would barely cover the costs!

There is shohorning and shoehorning. That is top class. 😁 😁 😁
