Munich

Hi Bills,

Munich is an alright city but not spectacular. Not having them myself I don’t know what you can do with children but I’ll ask my uncle who lives there.

What ages are they roughly?

What time of year are you going?

The English Garden is a huge park and good to walk around, especially the bit where they have created a place to surf. It’s fascinating watching them do their craft.

Also the BMW museum is good to see and visit and there is stuff for children to do in there. BMW is local to Munich.

You could get the S Bahn S8 out to Herrsching and visit Lake Amersee. It’s huge. You can get boat rides on it a bit like Windermere.

If you have a car I would definitely recommend a visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, it’s the one off the front cover of Blur Country House and is a real fairytale castle in the middle of the forest. Maybe you can get a coach trip out to it? It really is definitely worth seeing but it will take a good chunk of a day to do.

The Hofbrauhaus is the most famous of all the breweries in Munich and the bierhalle is amazing. Children are allowed in and I‘m sure will appreciate a dinner of sausages whilst you have a beer, whilst enjoying the traditional Bavarian music.

As Newbold says the town hall (Rathaus) in Marienplatz in the very centre has a famous clock that I think comes to life at 1pm. Google will help you.

Finally the Deutsches Museum is huge. It’s the worlds largest for science and technology and is on an island in the middle of the river. I’ve never been in but I imagine there’s loads in there to interest all of you as a family.

Many Germans speak English so you’ll be fine when you’re there.

Daggers is spot on. I’ve been a few times and have done the same stuff.
olly thing I could add is to go and see the Olympic Stadium.

There's no reason the trip can't be fun and educational for all three of you, and what better place than Germany? Ditch the science museum, that sounds boring.
Let them do whatever they want and then focus on actions and consequences.

Were you aware Hitler founded the Nazi party at the Hofbrauhaus beerhall? Bet you didn't know that!
Show up in period costume. Get some sausages for yourself and beer for the kids. Can you rent a beemer at the BMW museum? Give them your driver's licence and send them over to find out.
After they pick you up at the bar, hit the castle and show no interest in their safety. Place them on a battlement with debris to throw over the side.

The German government might disagree with me, but the only way to learn caution is through experience.

I’d love to see Bills in Lederhosen. 😆

Actually, thinking about it, no I wouldn’t. 😆

Just to add - the Allianz Arena (Home of TC1860 Munich and some other Munich based club) is good and the tourist office in the Rathaus has details of walking tours.

The Allianz is impressive however TSV 1860 no longer play there, they are back at their smaller Grunwalder stadium, their traditional home. Bayern did also have a stint playing there back in the day.

Oops - it's a few years since I went. They won't need that fancy lighting then.

Go down the nearest beergarden and start singing "Tomorrow Belongs To Me".
"The sun on the meadow is summery warm,
The stag in the forest runs free . . . ."
