Missed Europe by 5 points

Ten points from the last four games (including two wins against relegated teams, and one against a club who wants to go down, but didn't quite manage it this time) has, for a lot of people, bought Rodgers a bit of breathing space. But an opening day home defeat against newly promoted Huddersfield, and he will deservedly be back under the cosh.

Isnt this our 6th best prem finish? Has Brendan had a better record than MON? Do we really want Dyche to stifle our attacking players? Who can we get to do better?

Actually it’s equal 4th. Obviously the year we won it, the last two seasons 5th and MON got us 8th in his last year. In our history I believe in 1927 we came 3rd, the following year 2nd and in 1963 the ice kings came 4th.
So in our 138 year history this is the 7th equal best we’ve ever achieved. Bloody shite isn’t it.

Puts things into prespective though

We have the 8th highest wage bill in the EPL

We have the 5th highest paid 'elite' manager. He is paid premium money to get us higher than our wage budget allows

We have the best training facilities in the EPL.

Rodgers has been given more resources & rewards than any other manager in the Club's history. Comparing our disappointing season with the performance of any previous season is complete and utter nonsense. Throwing Dyche into the ring as a justification for keeping BR is a straw man argument. Sean Dyche will never be Manager of LCFC. Anyone offering him as a serious candidate is deluded

I respect those that are willing to give BR the opportunity to prove that he is as good as he thinks he is but every argument offered to support keeping him is flawed. The Club are being pragmatic but they knows and he knows that the heat is on.

Anyway, he is staying. The Club will give him chance to remedy his many errors and failings. 12 weeks to the the first game of the new season is not very long to shuffle the pack and 'freshen' things up. The 2022/23 fixture list is out in 23 days

It starts in 11 weeks (or just less than) on Saturday 6th August.

Between now and then we have a round of 3 games in the Nations League.

23 - 3rd
27 - 7th
28 - 3rd
29 - 2nd
30 - 8th
61 - 6th
66 - 7th
67 - 8th
76 - 7th

So maybe not even top 10.
Must have been good in the days of Arthur Chandler.

I was puzzled how - two years running - we spent a year qualifying for a competition that we then seemed to resent being in. Too many games, too much travel, not enough time on the training ground, blah blah. And then we played the stiffs half the time, or unwisely selected players returning from injury in freezing conditions or on dodgy pitches so that they got injured again, or just failed to turn up and got knocked out so early that we hardly made any cash from the whole damned thing.
For me, it's CL or forget it. Sorry.

Why hanker over the dredge of B rate European competition
because the experience all counts for both the players and management team, Each year playing in Europe makes you cuter, more streetwise better able to handle two games a week etc. Also higher club profile and better able to attract and retain players not to mention the extra a few quid involved.

That said I'm looking forward to a next year's premier league season without the distraction and extra games but would still rather have them than not.

I think it was good for both clubs and supporters to be in an advanced stage of a European competition.

The latter teams (Rennes, Eindhoven, Roma) certainly weren't duffers, and the atmosphere both before and at the games looked quite good, too. Good memories for many I suppose.

Maybe we paid the price in terms of being distracted in the league which maybe cost us games and final League position, who knows? I can't say for sure but I think it was worth it.

I’ve two comments to make.

Firstly I don’t see the attraction of giving a European competition a swerve half way through only to then focus on qualifying for it again. We were right in my opinion to focus on winning the Conference League rather than trying to qualify for it again.

Secondly, and that said, keep the Super League in the backs of your minds. Coefficiency is on a 5 year cycle. Wouldn’t it be great if in a few years if (when) this comes around again, we were one of the top 6 in England in co-efficiency, probably ahead of Arsenal, Spurs or maybe Man U, but are overlooked as we’re not seen to be big enough.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t at any time want to be part of it, but imagine the interviews with these teams if they’re actually the 7th most consistent team from the country in European competition.

Both excellent points, Dags.

For context, below is the current 5y club coefficient list. I think we're currently England's No. 7 but will probably drop below West Ham next season.
