Not sure how old you are but I’m 65 and have a similar memory. I definitely remember tram lines on Abbey Park rd.
 
There were routes by the Clock Tower up to Humberstone gate and to Londond Road but they all ceased in the late 40's a long while before I was born. You are correct the tram depot was at Abbey Park where eventually the main Corporation buses were garaged.
As a side note I used to go to a Hair dressers on the third floor in part of the building before it was all knocked down and developed into the Haymarket. Whilst sitting having a short back and sides whilst having the clock tower in full view outside of the window.
