Mary Wilson RIP

The Supremes were talented, classy and given some great songs to record by Berry Gordy

Because they looked so good and sounded so good, The Supremes were one of the first major artists to break down cultural & musical stereotypes and bring black music over to mainstream (white) audiences in the 1960's and 70's

Had to be tough to see her band-mate Diana Ross grab all the headlines and media attention, or maybe she was a quiet & modest person that was happy to stay in the background? Looks like she won the respect of the musical audience and was well taken care of with royalties, personal performances after The Supremes broke up.

Love Child, Ain't No Mountain & Stone Love, three of my favourites from this wonderful group. I echo Borebage..... RIP true Motown star, Mary Wilson

The Supremes started out as a 4 girl group called the Primettes, the then Diane Ross,Mary Wilson,Florence Ballard and Betty McGlown. Ballard chose the new name The Supremes with McGlown leaving and Barbara Martin joining.Martin then also left and it was just the three from then on. Florence Ballard was 'removed' in 1967 and replaced by Cindy Birdsong from Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles. Florence Ballard's demise was ultimately a tragic story. When Diana Ross finally left to go solo,Jean Terrell joined to become lead singer. Other members of the Supremes have been Lynda Laurence,Scherrie Payne and Susaye Greene!

......Lynda "Lawro" Lawrence has also worked as a part time football pundit notably predicting that Leicester City will never win. Always ending the prediction's spot by singing "Upside Down,You're Turning Me"!

yes mate, "Upside Down" is a good song for any City fan given the weekly merry-go-round of emotions, we all find ourselves on - LOL

Some of the stuff produced by Mary, Jean Terrell & Cindy Birdsong, after Ross left, was fabulous (Stoned Love e.g. - a brilliant pop song).
