Mary Pickford!

Knife & Fork pending
It is little known that Mary Pickford,"the girl with the curls", made 3 appearances as a goalkeeper for Everton FC during the 1912/13 season. Before she left for a better offer from Hollywood and became the most famous silent movie heroine of all time!
Mary's real name was Gladys and this is why one end of Goodison Park has been named the Gwladys Street End ever since. It is also because of Mary that Everton became the first football club ever to use 'hairnets' behind the goalposts!
Unfortunately Mary's inability to adapt to the new age of the "Talkies" in cinema stopped her from becoming the first ever female soccer pundit. Footballs loss became Hollywoods gain as Mary went on to become a major figure in the founding of United Artists!

Mary tried her best to come to terms with the demands of English professional football but her inability to come out and deal with crosses into the six yard box proved to be her downfall. Incapable of shouting "leave it lads" while merely cupping her chin in her hands, fluttering her eyelashes, with a look of silent shock and horror on her face was never going to convince any 'screen test' in front of the Everton coaching staff.
The end came in her only Merseyside "Derby" when her failure to cut out a cross resulted in a last minute headed winner by the Liverpool centre forward Rudolph Valendijktino!
That was enough for the then Everton manager Harry Cattastrophe and Mary's brief but eventful football career was over!
