Mark Lazarus

Was saddened to learn of the death of Mark Lazarus today (Tuesday) at the age of 86. Older folks might remember him for scoring the winner for QPR in the 1967 League Cup Final, but I knew him from his days at Orient, where he played under JHB when they won Division 3 in 1970. Great winger. Another sad loss. RIP.

That is sad. I remember Mark. After his playing days he ran a haulage firm. I once saw him at cafe having his lunch. Didn't disturb him but I immediately thought back to that famous day in 1967.

Leicester were knocked out 4-2 in the 4th Round at Loftus Road as QPR progressed to winning the League Cup Final. Big shock for us as QPR were 2 Divisions lower at the time on the way to also being Third Division Champions.
The 1967 Final was the first one to be played at Wembley instead of the 2 leg home and away affairs.

They were 2 goals down to First Division West Brom in the final and of course the comeback with Rodney Marsh and Mark.

I remember going down Millwall in about 1963 or 1964 to see Millwall v QPR.
I was never a Millwall fan but I went with some mates.
Lazarus was very impressive for QPR and I made the mistake of clapping a piece of skill from him.
Bloke behind was a docker (Millwall always kicked off at 3.15 so the dockers working on the Saturday morning shift could get to the game) and had a docker's hook sticking out of his jacket. He said if I clapped Lazarus again he would bury his hook in the back of my head.
Charming!
I never went back. Not in the home ends anyway.

That explains a lot! You clapped him again didn’t you George?

Yes not exactly sporting. My late uncle was a Millwall fan. Not a docker but worked on the railways. Pretty sure he was more fairly minded than Mr Hook.
