Maddison

It was noticeable when the players were doing their stretching before the game yesterday that Maddison was really holding forth talking to the team, geeing them up etc. Its the first time I have noticed our captain doing this in a very long time and seemed to reflect how he has matured as a player and a leader. He seemed to love the responsibility.

Unfortunately I can't see him staying with us beyond the end of this season which I for one will regret as much as anyone leaving, but can't begrudge him a move to whichever club he decides on - he has developed wonderfully as a player and a young man and deserves to be playing at the absolute top level given his abilities. No doubt if he ends up at one of the Big 6 Southgate will suddenly realise how good he is !

Will enjoy him for the rest of this season as I think we are twice the team when he plays.

Based on a couple of interviews he is future managerial material.
If Saturday told us what a team without YT looked like then it did the same for JM.
James's age is key as at 26 he will know that delaying a move to a big club any longer will send
the wrong signal about his ambition..
The assumption that he would be a small fish in a bigger pond is doubtful as he could be big fish anywhere imo...
Someone will have some big boots to fill.

We’re obviously not going to buy somebody who can just slot in and do what Maddison does, just as we couldn't find a direct replacement for Mahrez. The question is whether our overall recruitment is good enough for us to remain as effective without him. It's a big ask, but hopefully one we're prepared for given that Maddison has given no indication that he will sign a new contract with us.
