Looking At My Radio Times Euros Wall Chart

I didn't realise the top 3 from each group go into the knock-out stages.
Also good idea not to win our group D. Cos winner has to play runners up in Group F - and thats either France, Germany or Portugal.
Best to finish runners up. And play Runners up in Group E - probably Sweden or Poland.

Almost: four out of the six third-placed teams go through. Four points will probably be enough to qualify; three points will be enough to give you an outside shot.

Yes, winning England's group is a bit of a poisoned chalice. If we beat Scotland, the only way we won't finish top will be if we play the stiffs against the Czech Republic and lose, and Croatia beat both Scotland and the Czechs and better our goal difference in the process. Obviously if we lose to Scotland it's wide open...

The win yesterday realistically secures our progression. A win against Scotland, which many think will be easy but I think will be far from a walk in the park, will probably mean we’ll be group winners.

To win a tournament you have to beat the big teams sooner or later. I think it’s more important that we play as many of our games as possible at Wembley.

If we win the group where will we play our knockout games?

Same question if we come second?

I looked at it over a year ago but really can’t remember.

I know the semi’s and final are at Wembley.

On the evidence I have seen so far, the Croatia performance wouldn't beat Italy, Belgium or France. Throw in half a dozen of the usual suspects that have a similar chance as us, then you realise how difficult the challenge is.

Mrs Soho was previouly married to one of the Johnstone family who owned Johnstone Paints.
They sold out to Elf (a French petrol company) back in the1980's.
I am not allowed to use Johnstones paint in the house.

If we come top, we play the round of 16 game at Wembley (almost certainly against France, Germany or Portugal). Then if we won that game, we'd play the quarter final in Rome (probably against Spain).

If we come second, we play the round of 16 game in Copenhagen (probably against Sweden, Poland or Slovakia) then the quarter-final in St Petersburg (probably against France, Germany or Portugal).

So basically, coming 2nd gives us a more winnable-looking game in the round of 16 (albeit away from Wembley) before we come up against a very good team in the quarters.

in theory we could beat scotland, draw with czech, and still finish 2nd on goal difference.

in terms of preference for finishing top or second, its hard to weigh the home advantage against the quality of opposition. less traveling if we top the group, which has to count for something, so i think thats my choice. but lets wait and see how useful france/germany/portugal look....

We are currently second in the group. If we beat the sweaties & the Czechs beat Croatia we can treat the Czech game as a training session & finish happily in second place.

Just try and win every game. That will be challenge enough without complicated strategies. Beating the Scots is not negotiable. Can you imagine the fallout from Sturgeon & co.?

All the above suggests touching a belief that England ever have any control over any serious game they play..

in theory, a pub team could beat Scotland.
