Liverpool vs Arsenal 1989

The famous league decider in 1989 was on ITV last night. Extended highlights. Great match. What stood out was the (sad) way football has completely changed from just 30+ years ago. The only non British/Irish player within each 11 plus 2 subs was Grobbelaar who was Zimbabwean! Both teams really went for it. Good fair ( in most cases) hard tackles and if a foul was committed there were no theatrics involved. But the biggest difference I noticed was the total lack of time wasting. In the last few mins Liverpool just got on with it. Didn’t try one bit to delay. Only 3 mins of injury time. It was a complete delight to see. FIFA really need to look at this and IMO it’s got to the point whereby possibly 2 halves of 30 mins needs to be brought in and ANY time the ball is not in play the clock stops. It’s got farcical with now the added problem of VAR stoppages of upto 3-4 mins which don’t seem to be added on at the end. Bloody modern football.

Watched the game in a Hibs pub in Edinburgh before travelling over to Hampden Park the next day for Scotland v England.
Travelled to White Hart Lane early 70`s to see Leicester lose 3-4 in the last game of the season. Final whistle saw four of us rushing over North London to Wembley for England v West Germany. The night Gunter Netzer played us off the park.
Changed days indeed.

If I remember correctly, the pub, which was around the corner from the hotel in Edinburgh was rammed, and most of the clientele were cheering for Arsenal.
I think at the time, Arsenal had a fair few Irish players in their squad, which probably had something to do with it.

I still have that 1989 title decider on a VHS tape.
I was out at the Lancaster near Desford that night so I decided to record it.
Of course there were no mobile phones and nobody in the pub blurted out the score.
That VHS recorder seemed an amazing asset at the time and it allowed me to watch on Saturday morning without having a scooby doo as to what had happened.😁

As you are all well aware, FIFA have attempted to make football like basketball, a non-contact sport, as they think people are only interested in silky skill and nothing should get in the way of that.
nothing beats a crunching tackle made correctly, that's a skill too.

I was talking to a mate last night in the pub who played for Soton university when he was there, and he told a tale of one of the players going for a trial with Soton FC and the blokes introduction to a training game was Jimmy Case elbowing him in the throat before he'd even touched the ball!
