Levi Bellfield confesses again to Chillenden murders

I've been semi-obsessed with this case for years. The evidence against Michael Stone has always been virtually non-existent, yet he continues to rot in jail and is refusing to confess even though this is preventing him from being paroled. Levi Bellfield matches a description from a witness of a driver speeding away from the scene and looking very agitated. He has previously confessed to the crime but then retracted it. He's now confessed again...

Watch out - cos Stone and Bellfield know each other in prison.
Something might be being cooked up here.

Yes, it might be. I don’t really have a strong view on Bellfield’s guilt as there is little evidence, as yet, to support it. However I’ve always felt that Stone’s conviction was unsafe. Literally the only evidence against him is a highly improbable cell 'confession' to Damien Daley, himself a convicted murderer as well as a known liar. Daley has apparently been overheard on several occasions saying that he lied about Stone's confession.

Anecdotally, I find it interesting that Stone apparently walks freely in the main wing at Frankland prison - unheard of for somebody convicted of child murder. Obviously this doesn't prove anything, but it seems that the rest of the prison population also believes that he didn't do it.

One day this case is going to be as notorious as Colin Stagg's wrongful conviction for murdering Rachel Nickell.

The big problem with Bellfield being the murderer, is his alibi.
Provided by his then girlfriend, who remembers the day well because it was her birthday and also the year her daughter was born.
She said Bellfield was with her the entire day.
You'd think she might be protecting him, but she wouldn't be still doing that - as she has since talked about how he beat and raped her.

I don't think she's protecting him - she gave evidence against him that helped to convict him. Could she be mistaken? I admit it seems unlikely given the significance of the date, but people do make mistakes. Maybe they celebrated her birthday the day after the actual day (as people sometimes do) and she's just forgotten that detail? I don't know.

In addition to the description of the driver from the eye witness, Bellfield also resembles the description of the killer given by Josie Russell, which Michael Stone does not.

None of which proves his guilt. If he really is guilty, hopefully he'll be able to provide details that haven't been made public that proves it was him.

Bellfield has previous in "claiming" crimes falsely.

It has been suggested that he lied about those cases, to inflict further pain on the families of the victims.

That's not quite what that story says. It says that he's claimed responsibility for other crimes that the police were unable to corroborate them. He may or may not be lying about his involvement - the police don't know either way.
