Leicestershire Floods

I can’t believe it’s so late in the day after the county has featured in the news today due to the floods.

Is everyone alright?

Its what happens when you keep tarmacing and concreting over vast areas. I came from Gilmorton, where yesterday, water flowed down through a new development, welled up against an 8ft wall, before pushing it over on the road. Where I live now, Broughton Astley, they keep building more and more. Yesterdays floods were the worst in over 60 years.

Absolutely spot on. They are taking away the areas of natural drainage.

First item on BBC Morning News came from here in the Republic - the centre of Quorn village flooded once more. The sort of fame we don't want. Last night we all had an ear-splitting text message from the Environment Agency warning of the floods at Barrow-under-the-Soar and the evacuation of residents at the caravan park there. Loughborough and lots of other villages in the Soar Valley affected too. Expecting a plague of frogs any minute now.

There's lots of reasons it's happening and not just indiscriminate house building. Lack of investment in the necessary infrastructure and action in preventative measures are a major factor too. Dare I mention climate change as well?

Is it anything to do with the fact it pissed it down all night then snowed for 3 hours?

I take it you built your stately home at the top of the hill and paid for swimming lessons for the peasants

If you build houses on a flood plain then don't be surprised when they get flooded

The site of the new development in Cossington is flooded and they have only justs started on it

I have just successfully completed building my homemade Ark. There doesn’t seem to be too many leaks as yet. Finding 2 of each animals to take with me is the major problem!

All true, including climate change. The climate is changing. They csn argue over why, but it has changed radically in my lifetime.

If this sort of shit carries on for much longer Fred Olsen Cruise Lines will soon be picking up passengers from Humberstone Gate!

A friend lives on a boat at Pillings lock. Last nights water levels were the highest ever recorded there. They had to insert scaffold poles in to the mooring posts to extend the height and prevent the boats floating off the moorings.

East Goscote had the worst flooding since the village was built 60 years ago. An old neighbor sent me pics and vid of roads that have never ever flooded, under a foot of water or more.

Yep. No-one can be blind to the obvious changes, and the weird weather events.

Is there anyone on here who can remember a comparable day where it started with heavy snow/rain and minus temperatures, and then ends with the temperature in double figures? Then a day later is back to minus.

And these weird events are happening all around the globe. Exactly as modelled.

The problem of course is what to do about it. I certainly don't have any answers. We all know what we could do, as an entire species, but it's just impossible to actually do it.

That is open to debate.

Fuckall to do with climate hoax.

This is Leicester City Council.

Lived in my house on Beaumanor Road 19 years. Never had a problem. Not even a hint of flooding.
Last year was our first ever flood scare, The water stopped at the bottom of our door se we weren't flooded.
We were told by a council worker "Someone left the flood diversions open to long and it backed up Abbey Lane"

This year we were flooded with 7 inches of water
This year about 15 minutes after the environment agency sent out the flood warning text we were told "To save the City Centre flood diversions have had to be put in place", and they couldn't provide any sandbags because "The council doesn't have any sand "

Over a week on and STILL no sign of the council (apart from the fly tipping collectors) the roads and pavements are coated in a film of dirt and shit.

Are there not two things at play.

One is the actual flooding. Never happened in 19 years, now a regular (?) occurance. Why now is there enough water that they are even having to divert.

Two is the management of the flooding (both before it is sent your way, and again once it has been diverted) which sounds shambolic.

Whatever it is, you have my sympathies.

Neighbours have lived there since the 60's and this is their first flooding.

If it wasn't for the fact that last year we literally watched the street drain away within 30 minutes I would agree it's an issue.

0330 this year it was 7 inches deep, go downstairs at 0600 and once again drained.

Both times the ease of the water disappearing just doesn't fit right.

Could be worse, the poor bastard down Talbot Street only moved back in Boxing Day after last year's floods and this happens again.

Almost a year to the day. Coincidentally both on a Monday.

Also a lot of flooding in the south of the County over the last 12 months which is usually less publicised - Cosby, Whetstone, all but one road accessing Blaby, Crow Mills at South Wiggy... nobody has mentioned yet that another cause is the enlightened view that rivers and drainage courses mustn't be dredged and, guess what they fill up with shite and can't carry out their function.

I'm fed up banging this drum. Apparently dredging makes no difference. But the river beds are rising and the banks aren't so how does that work? Id happily the sacrifice the habitat of a few sticklebacks if it meant I weren't fucking flooded.
