My point was that kendal (no optimist he) has had a recent habit of complaining that a side we want to lose are all over the opposition when the latter promptly score a goal.

I can’t comment on Newcastle lacking lustre as I never watched the game - it wasn’t on the tele in our Corfu hotel. I followed it on the BBC website where the statistics (for what they are worth) indicate Newcastle were the dominant side against a team lucky not have a man sent off earlier than he was.

Gotcha. I was venting in the hope that the Geordies would pick up. They did after the Bamford miss. But Leeds wanted it more, and yes Junior should have gone early, but Newcastle never looked like a side who really wanted to win it. Howe has been downbeat speaking afterwards - ‘take our medicine and go back for two massive home games’.

I’m doing my best to drink myself into oblivion on an all-inclusive deal before the depressing thought of returning to Blighty on Thursday. A tad different to student days of yore, hopping around the Greek islands on three shillings and sixpence a day. I will be carrying on the self-destructive process in Newcastle next weekend. I ought to be locked up.
