It wont happen here they said.

2 things Daggers
It give "the man" knowledge of your spending habits
It takes away your freedom to choose
I'll buy that argument when everyone ditches their mobile phone, and closes their social media accounts.

but given we all carry a phone, and all these messages are spread via social media, it seems like there are better ways to stop "the man" having intimate knowledge of your life.

So you think handing over your spending habits and potential control of your spending is OK then?

Where did I say that??!

My point is that cashless society is just one a myriad of ways that "the man" is tracking your life.

If you genuinely don't want to be tracked then buy everything, in person, using cash, whilst not carrying a phone with you. Go completely off grid.

The point is if a business doesn’t accept cash it forces you to be part of the system, if you chose to have a mobile phone, it is your choice, you are not forced to have it switched on.
Not quite. The equivalent is walking away without completing the transaction.

That only works if there are places that don’t join in with cashless fashion
Sure. Which is largely the case in the places I go in. I'm not arguing for it one way or another, just suggesting that you are not forced to... yet. Personal preference is for places that accept cash and I find the lack of choice annoying.

I still use cash, I like it, in fact I always have Euro’s as well as Sterling in my wallet.

But I don’t give a monkeys if it’s card only nowadays. The card fees are smaller than they once were.

It’s much safer nowadays for a small shop owner to not have to carry large sums of cash to a bank to deposit. Much less chance of being robbed and probably beaten up in the process. Plus it saves them the time it takes to get to the bank and back, which for some will be a bit of a distance away. Also less chance of fraud. Plenty of businesses have been scammed by taking forged notes over the years.

Do banks charge now for people or business depositing large sums of cash? Given the time it takes the cashier I would have thought so.

So this is how it’s done.
Apathy and stupidity rules and then those same apathetic and stupid scratch their heads and blame the Tory’s or Labour or Brexit or Marxists (in some cases) without any blame on themselves.
So now we’re a gnats dick away from being able to determine who can and cannot drive cars. The plebs ain’t going anywhere.
Just like introducing laws so it makes it almost impossible to protest without fear of arrest and then fuck everyone over where by in normal times folk would be taking to the streets.
If it’s Card payments only, make sure you got £100 in your account else you ain’t going anywhere buddy.

I've never really considered this a political issue. It's driven by the banks and tech companies.

The banks deliberately make it hard to get hold of cash (closing branches, charging at ATMs). Then they charge shops fees for the 'convenience' of accepting cashless.

The benefit to tech companies is obvious.

If the supermarkets introduce these massive holding fees won't it push customers to independent garages?

There are not many true independents left
