How much longer can we do it

These refugees crossing the channel in ever increasing numbers we cannot sustain this for much longer.
I 'm humanitarian but surely we are'nt the only Country they can settle in Its encreasingly obvious France don't want 'em nor it seems does anyone else.
I am now at the stage where I am thinking we are too easy a touch they know they can get fed, housed and get money but we cannot afford to do it much longer for the well being of our own populance, officialdom have to start to get tough and repatriate them .

More nuanced than that.

For a start, any person fleeing war, persecution etc will gravitate towards a country where they already know the language or where they have friends or family already there.

If it’s both, then it’s going to be an even stronger pull.

I guess we only have to put ourselves in their situation to realise the effort you’d make to get to where you want to/have to.

I heard something the other day to the effect that if you compare the UK with the EU countries we rank something like 14th or 18th in terms of the number of refugees per capita, which suggests that a fair number are being taken by other countries.

When you think about the amount of money that miraculously appeared to spend on dodgy PPE etc during the first year of Covid, the amount of money it costs to support these people is a drop in the ocean. It's part of their divide and rule strategy.

Last month, 2,669 migrants crossed the channel in boats … 4,214 people died from Covid. Is it really a national crisis?

Worth reading the editorial in The Observer today (Observer) .. but if you don’t t want to read the whole thing .. for me this is the most important passage:

‘The number of people coming to the UK to claim asylum fell by 4% last year and stands at less than half what it was in the early 2000s. Britain receives a fraction of the asylum applications of Germany and France and fewer per resident than the EU average. Low-income countries host nine out of 10 displaced people worldwide.
What has happened is that the flow of people has been made more visible by the pandemic; the number reaching the UK by air has dropped steeply, which has pushed people to attempt the Channel crossing’

The thing that confuses me, is that an asylum seeker should be seeking asylum in the first safe country they reach.
None of our land or sea neighbour nations, are unsafe.
There are at minimum two other safe countries, before you reach the shores of Britain - from any of the potential unsafe nations on the planet.

Well just looking at the few countries on the graph above shows most do seek asylum elsewhere. Most of the ones that come to the UK do so as they have family here or they speak English already.

I get all of that, but a person is no longer an asylum-seeker when they have found asylum in the first safe country.
That can never be Britain, because of geography; unless they arrive by plane.

They don't apply for asylum in those countries, so they are asylum seekers when they get here.

We need immigration. It has to be controlled though not illegal immigration.

Part of me thinks the answer is for us to set up an office in Calais, take the details of everyone wanting to come across, do our research and for those who are accepted put them onto a bus and bring them here.

It’ll harm the criminals who are charging a fortune for seats in a dinghy or other boat and keep the immigrants safe. It’ll also save us a fortune by not paying the French to supposedly patrol the beaches (or in reality just pocket the millions we pay them).

And what about the people looking to enter illegally cos they know theres no chance their application will be approved. Do these figures quoted estimate how many have flooded in illegally, I very much doubt it.

I thought Farage was personally looking after this aspect now?

Who says they should? Not international law. This was an EU rule. Doh.

Sixth...that first country argument is a myth. You are confused...

Yeah I know about first country rules etc. Oadlad.
Just playing devil's advocate...
Where family isn't an aspect - the first safe country arrived at, is safety...

What I can’t understand is, when they land on the shores of Kent and scarper into the village high street, where do these people eventually end up? Where do they sleep and who supports them?

I think they should be able to travel through as many countries we travelled through to bomb the fuckers out of house and home in the first place. It’s only fair.

When they arrive they claim political asylum. The Government then pays them money and I presume also homes them while their application is going through,

This is what I mean, we should process these people in Calais or wherever and ship them safely across to UK. if they have got that far from their war torn country they will eventually get across the Channel by paying a fortune to someone with a boat.

If you want to know what is really going on and why I suggest you follow @lewis_goodall - (BBC Newsnight) on Twitter. He’s been reporting from Calais for the last few days. Informed, compassionate, facts .. including why people want to come to UK.

So yes let's let them all in. Don't worry about the fact that we are constantly ripping up green belt areas to build more and more housing for the ever increasing population. Don't worry about the fact that our road networks can't cope with the ever increasing volume of traffic. Don't worry that the NHS is creaking at the seams because of the pressure. Doctors surgeries ? How long do you wait ? Crime, how many times do you read the Mercury and see the person before a jury is not Joe, David, Pete, Gary ?
I don't have a problem with genuine persecuted refugees, but some of those crossing the channel come from African countries, did we bomb them ? Germany, France , Spain , Italy, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Switzerland, Portugal, Sweden, Finland, Norway, everyone a perfectly civilized nation, so why are we the destination of immigrants?
I don't have a problem with people who have fled because they feared for their lives, but that don't mean we have to accept being the world's dustbin for every person that's pissed off with their lot.
