How can they recover from this ?

Brauny

The optimistic pessimist
I don't see how they will even get a draw in any of the remaining games.

It's fucked, like last season we are a different team when the pressure is on.

I suspect you're right. Feeble.
But at least we scored in the last 15 mins again, which is a good sign of fitness and determination.

No point raising the tempo when you're 4-0 down with 10 minutes to play.
That should of been there from the 1st whistle.
They have done this several times this season and got away with it by waking up and scoring late goals in the 2nd half.
This was a shambolic nervous wreck of a performance. Our top players went missing when it mattered most.
This time they paid the price, and it will cost them the CL.

Or that the starting formation & personnel were not right.

Not sure I would have said we'd pick anybody different and hard to single people out as they were all useless but Ndidi & Riccardo struggled with the pace of the game (never seen Ndidi wander around so aimlessly he wasn't reading the game at all). Maddison & Tielemans a yard off it (the former again, you can tell when YT is knackered, he just starts swinging). Playing the 5 left Albrighton in particular in some sort of weird not-a-full-back-not-a-wing-back role (made worse by obviously needing to come back onto his right), Castagne & Riccardo essentially marking each other out the game Oh it goes on....

Maybe they could all take photos of their team mates home to see if the can recognise each other in the next game

I was being sarky, Brauny. Cos some numpty will pop up on here claiming that as a bonus from tonight's shit-show.

We disagreed last week. You said they were knackered, I said they looked like a team with anxiety. I stand by that, there was nothing wrong with the fitness when they played a higher tempo, after the game was lost.
They are just not starting games properly imo. Too many games are started with tippy tappy, lacklustre, and error strewn football. Usually we have grown into games, tonight we got everything we deserved.
It's gut wrenching that the team promise so much, but are mentally weak when the crunch games come.

Your right. If you want to know how we will do from here on in, you need only to refer back to last season end games. That it seems is the perfect template.

And I still disagree, I think the starting 11 look knackered (and the formation for the personnel poor). To me there is not much difference between the performances last week & tonight than those around the time of the elimination from the Europa League. The difference being that then we had a small break and kicked on on our return. We don't have that luxury this time (in fact this last week was the nearest we have had to that in the run in). We played with a higher tempo late on because we had a couple players who were a bit fresher generally and we didn't have our players being marked by our own players.

What I would say is that in the past I have questioned our approach to crunch games but usually from a tactical perspective rather than the mental as I think we've over thought it and tried to be clever only to almost always have our pants pulled down. There's been some signs this year of that changing.

I can't excuse them, they had 7 full days to prepare for this, and then put effort in when it was lost. Souness said similar, we can't start games like this.
