Historic Leicester

For the last six months I have been working regularly in central Leicester. Pocklingtons Walk. Being a carrot cruncher, I never really knew my way around, fully. But, with the onset of this fine summer, Ive been taking myself off for walks at diner time. Ive been pleasently surprised. Turn right towards the clock tower, and its pretty unremarkable, bordering on depressing. But carry on along Loseby Lane, and its offshoots, and its quite pretty and interesting, (the cathedral isnt really a cathedral, is it?). Yesterday I went the other way, along New Walk, on to London Road, back down Granby Street. I did work on New Walk, some years ago, and its nice enough, ut I was surprised at how many buildings are empty or run down. Anyone suggest anywhere else in walking distance, of PW, for a look?

Have a stroll down The Newark through the Magazine & then take a right at Castle gateway through to Castle gardens which is one of the nicest areas of Leicester especially in this good weather.
The Newark houses museum is also worth a visit if you have the time.

Where did you buy your stab-proof vest, Astley?

Just avoid anything north of Humberstone Gate and east of Churchgate.
The rest of the city centre will either offer something OK; or in the cases of Greyfriar's, The Lanes, New Walk, Town Hall Square, what is now called the Cultural Quarter, the Old Town etc - areas as nice as any other English city can offer.
Sadly most of the commercial offer is in the shitter bits of town, or the ultra corporate Highcross.
Even though the majority of the city centre is very photogenic - the best bits are under-utilised...

The canal/river around the Holiday Inn (is it still called that?) area is surprisingly decent.

Used to love cycling to Frog Island, although that was back in the 80's; not sure I would be so brave nowadays.

Absolutely do this.

Make sure you go into Mary de Castro Church - it is magnificent. It was once two churches a ‘parish’ church and a collegiate church built side by side. - https://stmarydecastro.org/

Also make your way up the castle mound - don’t expect spectacular views but still do it because I can’t believe how many people brought up in Leicester never have stood on top of it.

Plus on special heritage days you can gain access the 12th century great hall - an original part of the castle grounds now wrapped within a later building.

Plus in the grounds is one of the best micro pubs in Leicester serving cobs through a hatch from the deli next door. What’s not to like.

I get what you’re saying about the cathedral because on size alone it doesn’t match up to other grand churches in Leicester and the county but it is still impressive inside and of course has the tomb of Richard III.

Finally look out for the small monument to the Whipping Boys - apparently one day a year (around Easter I think) , just outside the castle walls, a group of men could legitimately whip people who passed by - who said we don’t know how to have fun in Leicester.

Also the Jewry Wall museum is worth a visit since being revamped - spectacular Roman mosaics.

The West End of St.Margaret’s Church faces Sanvey Gate. The word Sanvey is thought to come from the Latin ‘Sancta Via’,or Holy Way. The name refers to a procession that took place every Whit Sunday from St.Mary de Castro to St.Margaret’s.

As a London born fan that has never lived in Leicester my interest in the City came afterwards. I've certainly enjoyed some of the architecture etc. Hopefully Leicester folk can take pride in your city.

I'm very proud of my home city.
It's less exciting than other cities.
But it has less negative points than others.
The history of the city, I love. There is a wealth of interest there, if you look.
Soon to be home to 623,000 people.
Which should be a stepping-stone to a bright future.
