If you want to play possession-based football, you need players like this - ie, those whose responsibility is to screen the back four while providing a link between defence and attack through simple, efficient passing. They rarely do anything spectacular but managers tend to love them because they can see the benefit they bring to the team. This wouldn't exactly be a signing to get pulses racing, but it makes a lot of sense to me.
