Golden Boot

Article in The Athletic suggesting that with the current high number of pens, it'll be impossible for a non-taker to win the Golden Boot – so should pens be excluded from it? Can't say I care much, but I found it interesting that Sir Les never took a single pen amongst his impressive PL goal tally

I have always said that. With the likes of Kane (and Vardy) scoring plenty of goals and taking all the penalties it does massage the figures.

It’s always Lineker’s argument. He hardly took a pen at club level and only scored 4 for England. Same as Charlton. Yet the granny shagger breaks the England record by scoring lots of them.

I agree with every sentiment about penalties massaging strikers' figures, especially when it involves Rooney banging in a dozen against the likes of Liechtenstein and The People's Republic of Pimlico, and but they are still goals. I doubt Andreas Brehme wakes up each day with a feeling of crushing disappointment that his winning goal in the World Cup Final was just a penalty. As long as goals scored in penalty shoot-outs are never counted it will have to stay the same

I am not saying that penalties should not count in games, it's just they are not counted in golden boot competions internationally or domestic when teams only have one penalty taker.
The way football is played lately, somebody could win the golden boot without scoring an outfield goal.

Sorry guys, as an ex midfielder in the Melton & Rutland Sunday League who took a few, it takes skill & nerve to bang home penalties, especially against top professional goalkeepers.

I say, leave em in, pens should count for Golden Boot

What about if the pen taker himself is denied a clear goal-scoring chance by the foul that leads to the pen?

It was interesting reading about Fernandes this morning. Since he joined Man U he’s been involved in 20 goals, he’s scored 11 and has 9 assists.

He’s also taken 11 penalties and yesterday had his first one saved.

So he’s the hero at Man U but has only scored one from open play.
