Getting to sleep

In stressful times, sometimes it is hard to drop off. Someone put me onto the calming sounds of the rainforest...just makes me keep wanting to get up to go to the toilet.

Clearly counting sheep is out of the question (unless it is counting them all descending into League One).

What thoughts quiet people?

Tell us, what is the stress? What is causing it? Do you know? Is it really external? Or is it coming from deep within due to a disatisfaction of some kind? Personally, I believe the best cure for a restless sleep, is a conscience that is at peace with itself.

Dunno BJ - I wonder if a conscience at true peace is end-game stuff. If one finds inner harmony - where does one go from there? All that can happen is it be soiled...

Not so. With that comes acceptance. You're thinking of ups and downs and assuming that if you're happy, you can only become unhappy. I don't think that's the case. A person who is at peace with himself will endure good and bad times, just as much as someone who is not. Being at peace with yourself is a state, enduring is a more changeable experience.

Imagine you go camping and everything goes wrong. Fortunately, you have the skills, the wherewithal and the inner strenght to deal with it, endure, and move on. Now imagine the same experience for somebody who doesn't have that mind set, those skills, nor the strength within. Perhaps they perish on the mountainside.

I appreciate the difference between weather and climate in terms of ups and downs...however I prefer the almost zen-like notion of perpetual improvement rather than reaching a state of earthly bliss.

And I am no fan of camping....so I just hope mountain rescue were on call with a large dog bearing a barrel of spiritual guidance!

Who would camp on a mountainside?
You'd get no sleep as whoever at peace you were with yourself you'd keep rolling out of bed

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
I believe that you can achieve permanent improvement, but the way you are already expecting a disappointment, because there will be nothing left but negativity, I think is futile. It's better just to get on with the journey. I doubt that you'll worry once reach the destination.

back to OP, the two things that work for me...read a book or listen to music (quietly).

i use a read light app on my phone, so that the room stays dark and only the book is illuminated. i find after 15 mins or so that I am drifting off. the light app switches off after a set time.

similar with music....find an album without sudden loud songs that might wake you, and drift off listening to it. i wear shitty earbuds that fall out during the night.

Read a few of BJ's poems, you'll be off like a fucking light.

Daggers once wrote on a similar thread years ago - if you wake up in the middle of the night get up for a piss even if you think you don't need one.
It usually works i find.
Never forgot that - God i'm fkn boring!

You just need to empty your mind. It will come as no surprise to anybody, that I find that really easy to do.

Starting from the top of year head, relax every bone and muscle. Let yourself sink into relaxation. Ignore the obvious jokes that may come to mind, about your dick.

Is it possible for people to post anything on here without it ending in a degeneration into lavatories, penises and sex?

I don't have any trouble getting to sleep, it's staying asleep that is the problem, and it's not just the bladder thing

Yeah, folk rarely wake up for a poo do they.
It's normally a bladder thing.
Although sleeping through a poo can get messy.
Mate of mine woke up for a poo once while in a hotel. He didn't know where the bathroom was in the dark so he done it in the waste paper bin beside the bed.

Lavatory Vanles strikes again!
How is it possible that such abysmal filth slops endlessly onto everything you mention?

Never thought of that. Don't think I've ever woken up for a shit. Never woken up covered in shit either.

Now I've written it; I bet one of them will happen now.

My wife started to listen to those hypnotherapy recordings on you tube. Never heard so much bollocks in my life (Apart from Brauny)
She had to stop listening coz I was laughing too much and kept disturbing her.
