One of the very best British films. True classicITV4 11.15 tonight.
Whitburn thats fantastic. I thought this coastline had been "greened up" by conservationists. Glad to see it still looks just like in the film.Blackhall Colliery beach (where the final scene is shot) still shows the signs of mining. Was walking there this week.

Most of it has been, Soho - mostly for the better, it must be said. You wouldn't know there had been a pit there if it wasn't for the black beach & the dodgy, coloured pools! All that stretch of coast from Hartlepool up to South Shields was the dumping ground for slaaaag, once upon a time.Whitburn thats fantastic. Does Ian Hendry's dead body count as slaaaag?????Most of it has been, Soho - mostly for the better, it must be said. Spent a long summer in the 80s commuting to Billingham from Newcastle on that amazing stretch of coastal train line. The black sea was an extraordinary sight, especially on a bright sunny morningMost of it has been, Soho - mostly for the better, it must be said. I enjoyed that film tooWatched THE DIG last night new film quite intriguing about the Sutton Hoo
Excavation during the war dam good film true story as well
John Osborne's cameo as Kinnear is one of the best things in the filmThe book,Jack's Return Home by Ted Lewis, has the story set in Scunthorpe. Wise move for the film to be depicted in Newcastle.
Loosely inspired by the real life murder of Angus Sibbet by North-East fruit machine gangster Vince Landa, the so called 'one arm bandit murder'. It's believed it was part of a failed attempt by the Kray twins to gain control.
Landa fled the country and his vacated mansion,Dryderdale Hall, was used in the film as Cyril Kinnear's house.
Ian Hendry was the original choice to play Carter but his drinking and bad physical condition was such that Michael Caine got the part instead. So there was real animosity underpinning their scenes together!
