Jim Fitton, 66, was sentenced to 15 years for attempting to smuggle 12 stones and broken pottery.
Seems everyone thought it was a shocking sentence but why would you even take the risk?
He apparently asked the permission of the Iraqi guide and a policemen who was accompanying them, and they both said it was fine to take the pieces. The judge accepted that he did not act with criminal intent, but in ignorance of the law. The broken pieces of pottery in his suitcase were, apparently, worth next to nothing, so he wasn't trying to smuggle anything of value. He must have known the law in Iraq.
