Frankie Beverley RIP

I've just read that he passed away yesterday.

Maze at Prestatyn Weekender in November 1989, still one of the greatest gigs I've been to.
I have the video of it in the loft , if I had something to play it on I'd get it on now. Frankie is in tears as he leaves the stage after the gig, he goes on to say that he had never witnessed anything like the crowd that night.
Genuine legend.

Where's Bnet, we need to get a thread going

Still have If That’s What You Wanted on vinyl single. Got it from either Selectadisc or Rediffusion in Nottingham way back in the day.
RIP Frank

That goes for a few bob on Discogs. Quite a bit more than a few bob actually
It’s up in the loft in a record case along with other stuff. Nothing to play it on at the moment. Along with other stuff I bought from sellers in the Highland Room at Blackpool Mecca as well. I wouldn’t ever sell my memories. Perhaps I’ll try and get something cheap and cheerful to play them on!

For playing your valuable records (any record in fact), see if you can invest in a turntable that isn't at the budget end - most of these have a stylus that can't be replaced, & the one you do get with it, has such a heavy tracking force (i.e. the weight at which your needle sits on the record), it will worsen the record's grooves far quicker.

I’ve got I Can’t Turn You Loose by Otis Redding on Atlantic label that I found in Blackpool. It’s actually the “B” side but took off better than the “A” side as being more up tempo. I have some other recordings on the “London” label which I think was the British arm of Decca Records at the time.
As you say I guess these things depend on the condition of them as well. Been years now since I last opened the case!

A good clean of the records (I recommend this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vinyl-Reco...-1-spons&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGY&psc=1), a decent turntable, a good amp & punchy speakers, & I'm sure it'll seem like Otis is right there in the room...

That's the catch-22 of owning most phonographs. I've got a 1921 powerless Victrola that came equipped with bags of stylus', they're just tiny finishing nails. The instruction on the bags say replace after five plays. It devastates the record, but finding a 78 in decent shape is almost an impossibility.
It's tough as a hobby, do you just seal the records away in their packaging or use it as it was meant to be used? If it's for your own enjoyment and not for resale, be responsible and fire away.

I would always say play them, that's why you bought them in the first place.
Having said that,.if they're in at least very good to excellent nick & someone is willing to pay you upwards of £250 for Frankie Beverley, well that pays for an away trip or 2.
Depends on your outlook I suppose.

Yeah, I'm with you. I have left some things unopened just for the sake that it's been sealed for 60 years, who am I to mess with it? You do meet some kooks who are pretty fanatical, something seems unnatural about buying and not using. It's terrible when you turn something easy into this moral battle with yourself, complicating something that's not that complicated.
