Ey up Flemington!

Just noticed your Avatar bud, fairly sure taken at the Kop end during 80/81, in fact the picture was used for his Testimonial Brochure 'Mark 1'.

Me too. My cousin took it and got him to sign it at a players night at the time. Vastly underrated and a lovely bloke.

In addition to his 330+ unbroken appearance record and amazing consistency, I loved that he played the game with a smile on his face, especially as he got older.

You could tell he was also well-liked by his fellow pros. I’ll always remember after one game at Newcastle, when he had single-handledly kept the Barcodes at bay until they got a last minute winner, at the end of the game Peter Withe came up to Mark and hugged him. There was genuine affection and recognition of what a great game he had played.

I think you're right. Shockingly dropped in favour of Mark Grew (how did that go) he remained dignified and returned to the side a short time later, his replacemnt a total disaster. I remember feeling sick to my stomach when he went to Direby and then helped them dump us out of the Milk Cup in - I think 85? - they were in Div 3 at the time with, if memory serves Bobby Davison up front...
Used to love him joining in with "He's not bald" and the pretence of getting his fingers stuck in the netting.
His reactions to having to leave the pitch after that horrendous challenge by Bates during the 82 Quarter Final showed what we all knew - how much this club meant to him, and hopefully still does.

Went to watch Direby at the old Bootham Crescent ground in Hull, just because he was playing.

Spoke to Gary S and Cosby about the interview they did with him for the Fox. They said he was an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to meet.

He's definitely up there in the LCFC greats!

I think the Mark Grew experiment lasted four games. Gordon Milne must have begged Wallington to come back!

A year earlier, City were winning an uneventful game at an absolutely freezing Brunton Park with a handful of City fans huddled together in the main stand. To entertain ourselves we launched into a chorus of “Wallington, Wallington, give us a wave”. Ever the gent, he duly obliged!

It’s funny the stupid little things you remember.
