When Southgate is at long last binned, his tenure will be judged not as ‘nearly successful’, but as a huge missed opportunity. At a time when many of the established football nations were in transition, or decline, his over reliance on a small coterie of BCC players picked more for their club badge and willingness to fit in, rather than pure ability, or imagination, still less form, will be seen as a waste of our best chance of international silverware for more than a generation.
