DVLA

When in a hole it's best to stop digging. I refer you to my previous post.

25000 lost passes last year.

Huge backlog of applications not being processed

Drivers hourly rates climbing by the day. Excellent I am sure that you will agree.
Yes but not sure how the country will react to the corresponding rise in prices .

It was obviously a typo as 200000 is more than the 100000 that left, I knew he meant 20000, as I’m sure you did. Or were you seeing 1000000 and 200000?
It’s the rounding up, so many 000s.
You would see it that way but this guy has a track record of misrepresentation

Have never quoted anything not from
a regulated news source .
Regulated means they have to retract any unfactual reporting .

Let’s just write 20,000 drivers off the list then. They’d make a hell of a difference right now.
Yes it’s great they’re getting paid more but it’ll take time to improve conditions. Probably meaning not much will change on that score. Especially as trains and driverless trucks are the future so any penny pinchers will think why spend on something that won’t have a long term benefit. Short term thinking is the problem.

Driverless trucks????

Ffs. At least try to be realistic

Still digging I see.

Sometimes it's best to just accept that you don't know fuck all about what you are talking about but just keep pressing on if it makes you feel better.
.
Why the aggression ?

I’m not talking six months.
We may be some way off but undoubtedly transport companies won’t be happy about paying big increases in salaries. They and the stores will push for the technology.

Im an hgv driver , i hope they announce driverless trucks tommorow , think all them applications sat at dvla will dissapear as why would anyone pay to join an industry that would be getting rid of them very soon
as for the shortage , well where do i start ………

It would be interesting to get your views as you actually have real experience.

Its been in decline for years , in the past the only way to make a decent living would be to go as a ltd co , via agency - self employed , you take all earnings then pay a discount tax bill at end of the year
last year govt put a stop to that .IR35
all the ee (east europeans would work all year then tax time would dip back home for a bit avoiding tax )
but that fucked it up for a lot of drivers that were honest & a lot left as prob near retirement & could earn as much stacking shelves
then all the laws , rules , regulations , a driver needs to know are ridiculus , more than airline pilots im led to believe & if you do continental work for each country its different
when the dcpc came in a few years back again a lot of the old boys jacked it in ( doing the job for 30/40 years to be told by someone whos never drove for a living where theyve been going wrong)
why if you are a young man or woman either with a family or a social life would you come into the industry that can legally have you working a 15 hour day with 9 hours off 3 times a week ?
up to a few months ago even our own firms didnt value us , “wont do 15 hour run ? Then your sacked plenty more where you come from”
then we get to faciltys , stinking overpriced services , stinking laybyes , shite overpriced food , no parking , no access , we want the goods off your trailer but the fuck off & be somebody elses problem & untill recently for about £12 an hour
the RHA have reeped what they have sown

I packed in driving a long time ago but all of those things you describe were true back then. Driving especially long distance is something you either love or hate, I loved it but it’s not for a family man. On top of everything you described don’t forget the dogs abuse you get for “being in the way” being too slow on the motorway being around town and stopping to unload and daring to be late for your delivery slot

Hackney, the notion that the railways can ever deliver to 6 shops in a day is daft, they’re great for bulk but no use at distribution in my driving life time trucks have gone from 32 tons to 44 tonnes and have increased in length from 40ft to 52ft to increase efficiency

Trucks have increased in comfort fantastically but they can be your home for weeks at a time and remember when you sleep in a vehicle you become an unpaid night watchman.

When I passed my test with good old Harry Coates 4 drops in London was a day and a half’s work, when I finished we nipped to London on the way to Manchester and if you got back with half an hour of time left you set off on your next run

I went from log books through tachometers to digital read outs and now satellite tracking which meant you went from being in charge of your own day to just being a machine operator but with far more responsibility to all the other suicidal loonies on the road. Can you imagine a job where three 10% errors in three years means you can lose you livelihood, on distance work three years driving can be over 200,000 miles.

Just ask yourself if you’d want all that shit for £13 an hour and once you’re passed 50 paying for your own medical every 5 years

Spot on Birstall was going to post pretty much the same but then someone would still come on here and blame Brexit as the sole cause
As I understand Class 1 drivers cannot driver while awaiting renewal
You can as long as there is no potential issue with your medical

Allegedly more freight will be moved up and down the country by train. We're already seeing companies buying fleets of vans so they can deliver smaller loads more quickly and frequently.

Railways can only move bulk loads the Tesco trains from Daventry to Scotland are all containers which still require 44 tonners at each end. Containers have to be much stronger than an ordinary body so in fact they can carry less weight.

Companies are buying small vans because the EU changed the licensing rules so that an ordinary license only allows vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes now where it used to be 7.5 tonnes (another reason why we need more HGV drivers)

"Our online services have not been impacted by the pandemic and continue to run as normal and without any delays. The majority of transactions can be done online including renewing a driving licence. There are delays in processing paper applications due to ongoing industrial action and social distancing requirements, which means that we have had fewer staff than usual on site at any one time."

There have been very lengthy delays even for online services. Yet the DVLA say Covid hasn't impacted that.

If the processing of applications is fundamental to the operation of the UK - the the government should have stepped in earlier and sorted it out. Regardless of the reasons.
