The Haulage Association are saying a lot of drivers went home because of the pandemic. Also the Polish economy is doing well so they have driver jobs and decent pay at the moment
The biggest reason given for driver shortage is retirement which begs the question didn't these companies know how old their staff were and how does it fit in with the TUC's demand for lowering the retirement age

All the reports I’ve read seem
pretty unanimous that of the -100000 we are short of around 200000 are down to Brexit . It will also make it much harder to resolve . The even more onerous border bureaucracy we voted for will make it a lot worse after Jan 1st .
Interesting the EU countries are encountering no such problems with fuel.

Well if Brexit is to blame how come Poland is 120,000 and Germany 60,000 drivers short?
Hauliers knew Brexit was coming but they didn't prepare, they knew how old the drivers were and didn't prepare and they knew the tax loop hole was closing and didn't prepare so how come it's the government's fault
The only thing nobody could plan for was the pandemic
And just ask yourself why BP "reported" to ministers that there were 3 filling stations in the south without fuel (out of 8000) and that got "leaked" to the press who behaved totally irresponsibly and scared the shit out of the gormless population and then ask why we have problems

I don’t profess to be an expert in logistics but the hauliers warned the government this was coming 5 years ago . It can’t all be down to an industry as important as this to create the conditions people want to work in ?

It's been going on for years. We're all to blame, we all want cheap goods delivered 24/7. The industry has to pay sensible wages not the government. The only thing the government has changed is to close a tax loop hole which a lot of people would regard as reasonable. As a nation we could perhaps expect better facilities for drivers for overnight stops and maybe local councils could provide better parking etc. But an awful lot of drivers are on distribution work which means they're home every night, but it does mean working all sorts of shifts and weekends and that is basically down to the public demand for everything right now. The big supermarkets want to use their floor space to sell not store which in turn means they want small frequent deliveries which means more drivers are required. It comes down the the likes of Tesco taking a hit on their multi million pound profits to pay drivers or hauliers a fair rate for the job

No, it was flagged continuously upstairs and to customers. Who refused to fund solutions and ignored the issue hoping it would go away. No one wants to pass on costs to us, the consumer. We ultimately drive everything.

Try focusing on the many day to day mistakes of the current Government and you might find many that agree with you even if they have and may yet still vote for them.

It was obviously a typo as 200000 is more than the 100000 that left, I knew he meant 20000, as I’m sure you did. Or were you seeing 1000000 and 200000?
It’s the rounding up, so many 000s.
