Dunkirk

Two different films. ‘71 is about a British soldier who gets lost in Catholic Belfast in 1971 and has to escape. 1917 is about a couple of British soldiers who get trapped behind enemy lines during the First World War. Similar titles and concepts, but different movies.

I was referring to ‘71. I haven’t seen 1917.
Just checking, I've seen 1917 so now another one to add to the list

Checking it's not a typo, 1971 ot 1917?

'71 is a gripping, edge of your seat film - guaranteed to enthrall you.

1917 is a supposedly 'true' war story from Sam Mendes Grandad.

German plane lands on British soldiers. Pilot gets out, pulls a knife and says 'Zis is for the Kaiser ahaha!' and stabs British soldiers. Oh, so it's that kind of war movie.

Fuck off, Mendes. There's an episode of Combat that needs my attention.

It does beg the question: how many decent WWI films are there? There are plenty of good WWII films, but I can't think of many that focus on the First World War. Gallipoli was decent. Paths of Glory. Any more?

Went the day Well golden oldie WW 2
They shall not grow old WW1
The Water Diviner. WW 1
King and Country WW1
All pretty good films

Oh,What A Lovely War!
Gallipoli
The Light Horsemen
Sergeant York
All The Kings Men(Sandringham Company who advanced at Gallipoli in 1915 and were never seen again).
And a mention for Breaker Morant (Boer War).

Cinema was just dawning, I suspect it was a subject people were tired of? Then events proceeded and dictated otherwise.

Aces High (when the average life expectancy of new pilots in the RFC was being measured as a matter of a few days).
The Blue Max (similar story but from the German perspective).
Richthofen & Brown.
Zeppelin (sheer hokum and nonsense).

1917 is utter nonsense.

Props though for rehashing the single camera, continuous shot, Orson Welles tried it in Magnificent Ambersons. Most of it was destroyed by the studio, so we'll never know. Took me a few minutes to get it, but it was that distinct.
