Director of Football

Thought some would be interested in this article, written in August 2022, about the Sporting Director/Director of Football role -

I’ve often wondered how our director of football got this role having previously been youth team coach. Seems like a huge shift in responsibility.

I’ve also wondered what was left for our Director of Football to do if our elite manager was setting out the strategy about the way we play at all age group levels and the way forward, and if we have another guy to identify players and conclude the deals for their purchase.

What’s left? I’d presumed one would be advising Top about the managers performance and plans, being a second opinion on player recruitment, and succession planning - identifying future managers/coaches and other high ranking positions connected with the ‘sporting’ side.

What do others think our Director of Football role is ... and more importantly how’s he performing in that role?

As Top and family are not football people I believe we need a Director of Football to advise the family on all senior matters concerning the football side. Including that of how the manager is progressing or regressing.

That person needs to have a ton of experience and be respected. To have been promoted from youth team coach into this high position is crazy in my opinion.

In the hierarchy Rudkin must have been higher than Rodgers, so how can that possibly work that the youth team coach is more senior than the first team manager, and presumably paid a hell of a lot less?

Given that our youth teams have also imploded this season he needs to be sacked or relegated back to just heading up our youth operation with a new Director recruited. Ranieri or O’Neill would be perfect.

If I was a prospective manager, this would put me off joining our club.

It wouldn't surprise me if eventually we see someone from the title winning team eventually takes this role.
Someone close to the family
Someone with strong connections, loyalty and belief in what the family want to achieve for the club
Someone articulate when he speaks and appears to have a higher level of intelligence
Someone that's won domestic trophies with the club and knows the game in the premier league and at international level.

Does he play in goal?

He’s too busy with his tattoo parlours.
