Been invited for a meal at an expensive restaurant in Manchester ( it’s where we live ) for my son’s girlfriend’s birthday.

It’s an expensive place and not much I like on the menu, difficult for me as I have Crohn’s Disease.

So…

There’s four of us and it will cost a bloody fortune, is there a way I can not have to pay for three courses, feigning being full, or blame my illness to keep the cost down, then just have a cob when I get home.

We do like her family, it’s just not our scene or price range.

Your Crohn's is your out.

If you have legitimate reasons for not wanting to do it, don't do it. If they're sound people, they'll understand.

Just say that you don't like to go to such places with your condition through bitter experience. And offer to meet up afterwards for a drink somewhere.

Much better than going and worrying through it all.

Accidently leave your bank card & cash at home

or

Throw a sicky

Be nothing but complimentary to the servers, just say 'thanks, we're fasting'. This does not invite questions and you come out clean as a whistle and someone with conviction.

As Neurofox says, your Crohns is definitely a reasonable excuse. I have Ulcerative Colitis and eating out can be a nightmare, trying to avoid foods that trigger my UC. You're often left with little to no choice in some places. Speak to the restaurant before hand to see what they can do for you.....and if the others are reasonable people, they will understand your reasons for either not going or eating little/nothing.

Eat fried onions the night before so you can keep cracking stinky ones off, that will put them off their posh nosh.

On an evening like that I like to break the ice with a joke or two, something along the lines of, do you know the difference between in-laws and out laws? Out laws are wanted.

Thanks for all the hints and tips. Nope we’re still attending with a hopefully kind credit card, though I have lost count of the amount of times my Crohn’s has wasted money.

Development this morning as I was going to drive us into Manchester as I work there and know the city well and my wife hates driving round is that, as my wife is tee total, the ‘in laws’ have cheekily asked if we’ll both drive to transport us into Manchester. Two cars, a wife that hates driving in Manchester and my wife helpfully agreed.

Cheeky bastards, they better be paying now.

And I quite fancied watching the Man City v Arsenal match.
