Defending Corners etc

Been trying to work this inability out for a while now, like most others l guess.

Heres a few thoughts that maybe factors in this farcical situation.

Ward looked as bad as Kasper on Saturday. I was thinking this is possibly a hangover, our defence are so used to Kasper not controlling the area, so are not trusting Ward in the say way, yet. The goalkeeper has to control the box and his defence.

Also, we fill our 6 yard box with player, 8 mostly, and no one as a specific job, so no one as any responsibility. This also leads to the opposite having men spare on the edge of the box. I think we get in each others way, then tend to leave it for someone else. This was obvious on Saturday, we don't leave anyone up front either which would make them move two of theirs back as cover, plus others from the oppo being more cautious of a break than attacking options.

I thinks its the numbers game that needs addressing ! Not saying I've got the answer but I'm feeling its this way, what do you think ?

I had to have a chuckle a couple of days ago when SSN showed a clip of the first goal ever scored in the PL.
It was by Brian Deane, then of Sheff U, and a header from a long throw, the commentater said " The goalkeeper was in no mans land" The Goalkeeper was Peter Schmeichel. :)

Leave 3 upfield, that means 4 of the opposition will have to stay back with them, also if we win the ball we will have outlets which should prevent the ball coming straight back. That will clear the penalty area a bit & should give the keeper more chamce of coming out & catch the ball & we can man mark instead of all this zonal marking crap. Our attacking players are useless defenders anyway & are a liability when defending corners, so keep em upfield out of the way.

It seems so obvious to try this, things can't be any worse & it worked very well under Claudio. Then again our elite very well paid manager doesn't have a clue what he's doing, so I doubt very much that things will change

I was always taught as a goalkeeper to have players cover the front post, if they had a big guy there put a player in front and behind him to stop his leap. I did not put any defenders in the six yard box apart from on the inside of the posts. ,that was my domain and if the ball was to high for the guys at the front, chances are its only my reach will be able to get it, as my starting point was just inside the back post , meaning i have a good run to gain height. I had a forward or two on the halfway line for a break and to keep there defenders occupied from coming forward. Apart from that its just man marking. I do not remember any great problems at corners for us as long as I did my job. To have every player in the penalty area must be manic for the keeper and cause more problems than it solves.

The whole scenario is so pathetic it’s untrue.
Totally agree that the amount of bodies in the area causes complete carnage but then look at the goal on Saturday. Every single one of the buggers in the box & still……..still 2 unmarked arsenal players at the back post.

I'm not paid £10million a year to MANAGE a team so probably not qualified. However, when I played bang average Sunday football our Manager used to identify their threats at corners and set pieces and match them up with brute force. So, for example, if it was Harry Kane or Tammy Abraham he wouldn't mark them with midgets. Stupid I guess.

Some of the blame for the first goal on Saturday sits with Vardy flicking the corner across goal

Why is he even back there? Claudio used to keep him and Mahrez on the halfway line.

Especially when you have Vardy on the half way line and get it straight out to him not try to pass it through 10 opposing players.

Can we refer to said markers as persons of restricted growth please Hamps, unless of course you mean placing a small but delicious kiddies sweetie on each defender?

Last year we did try all the above; more members on halfway line, limited bodies in the box, man to man, zonal, mixed and none worked.

Rodgers did identify it as being down to having no players with aggression two seasons ago and still hasn't been addressed.

I would class Wilf and fofana as having decent strength and aggression, Evans and castagne OK but no one else.

Leave at least 2 up....it's not rocket science....also as another poster has said go man to man,but make sure the two are pretty much evenly matched.Luke Thomas/Marc(can't remember which) v Rudigar last season was not a good idea.

We are basically a physically small side which also lacks aggression. Both Saliba and Gabrial on Saturday caused us problems but they’re both 6’4”+ and unlike Vestergaard can jump.
I’d definitely put 3 on the halfway line. Didn’t we do it in the home game to Brentford last season

We definitely tried this, and the opposition didn't leave 3 back to defend as was hoped.
