Davie Gibson

I’ve mentioned before that I know Davie’s nephew Steven.

He’s looking for any old footage at all that shows Davie playing for us or Scotland too.

Any help would be much appreciated for Steven and his Aunt (Davie’s daughter) too.

Ice Kings 1962/63 was his peak season. Here's a classic bit of action from our win at Wolves in December. Go to 9.30 in this video. The quality of the pictures is not good but the quality of the football is sensational. See Gibbo's back heel and then fine sweeping finish. That cry of 'Come on Leicester' you can hear is from legendary City fan Bernie Henson:

There's a fantastic article from the Sunday Express about Gibbo in here (scroll down to number 27):

There are so many great stories to tell about Dave Gibson. No doubt you've read his wonderful book, but there's a lot more to be told. If I have a chance I'll put an article on here. For the time being here's just a couple of snippets.

This was the Mirror headline when we signed him in January 1962:

In the article it says he got the nickname beacuse of his 'sparow-thin legs' (that picture's not him by the way).

When we signed him the only problem was he hadn't finished his national service. He was due to fly out to Aden shortly afterwards. But Gibbo had a little ruse going. He kept getting doctor's notes to say he was sick when there was nothing wrong with him.

He quickly became a Filbert Street favourite, a report from a 2-2 draw with West Ham saying 'he worked his way through the Hammers defence, grinning perpetually'.

It wasn't just Gibbo grinning. With the ruse continuing, one newspaper headline was 'the whole of Leicester is laughing'.

Then he scored his first ever goal for us against Wolves. Great picture here of that moment:

The Army finally sussed him out, and he had to fly out to the Middle East. But he'd soon be back to continue the love affair. I only wish I'd had a chance to see him play.

many thanks to all who’ve posted.

It’s all sent to Steven and he’s really grateful and amazed by the response !

Nish up front , knew he was versatile but not as a forward, learn something new everyday 👍

I was at that game. Behind the goal where Nish scored the twice taken pen which was packed with Rotherham.
I was carried lengthways over everyones heads from the back to the front of the terrace. ( I was only 9!). My folks joined me around 20 mins later.

Glad I wasn’t absconded as I’d have been brought up in the delights of south Sheffield

Ha! Millmoor packed looks great , I went 1979 lg cup 2nd leg 0.3 midway game , think IT were 5000 attendance , Rodney fern played for them , I was just 3 months into ft work but left at 3ish as that’s what I’d do at school 😀 the gaffer went mad next day , I didn’t get why and he didn’t get the mind of a 1979 16 year old city fan 🦊 so wish I was born earlier regarding football though the 60s must have been great lg

When it was at it's peak in the early 60's BBC programme "That was the week that was" , David Frost mentioned Gibbo one Saturday night.
You know how he spoke, Frost not Gibbo :) "Mr David Gibson" rolled off Frost's tongue.
