Cricket anyone?

the change of ball was probably just as significant - the umpires certainly did us a favour

i think the test the Aussies had against India helped prepare them for what was to come whereas we started 'cold' and it showed

By the end we were the strongest team - shame it wasn't a 6 match series
I didn’t realise until late yesterday that the ball was changed for one that McGrath claims was much newer.

I would go out on a limb and say that's the best Ashes series in England since 1981. If not for manchester rain and Stokes early declaration in the first test we would've wiped the floor with the Aussies who are a great side.
Edited to add: Lyons injury was also key for the final 2 tests. Had he been playing maybe we wouldn't have won/drawn.
Yes the Manchester rain and Stokes declaration helped the Aussies.
Worth remembering the rain helped us on Day 4 as their openers were totally in control.

I remember when tests in this country started on a Thursday and finished on a Tuesday with Sunday as a rest day.
The next test would start a week on Thursday.
If it was a 5 test series there would be a extra week's rest.
As said previously, it's all crammed in to cater for T20, ODI internationals and now The Circus. Sorry I meant The Hundred 😉
But it wasn't a week's (or extra week's) rest for most of them as they went back to play for their counties!

Living in Somerset, the county team are well supported, T20 champions too. Taunton is a modern ground, possibly too small for a international test but England could use it for ODI.

It was mooted a few years ago that Devon and Cornwall formed a county championship team, I don’t see that happening now, shame because there would be incredible support.

I’ve seen test match cricket at The Rose Bowl. I’ve seen Ashes cricket at Durham and Cardiff, but believe the Australia series should be played at the biggest grounds so more spectators can get to watch.

I’ve not been to Bristol or Taunton. Maybe Bristol could be built up to be a 20,000 stadium? I’m not sure there’s space to do so given the flats at one end.
i'm not arguing per se about the Ashes. We only have 6 test grounds currently in rotation. Even Grace road has held minor nation international cricket.
anybody in the southwest has to travel to london or edgbaston to see test cricket which is frankly ridiculous. Bristol would be a good compromise.
you could also make an argument for durham to get the north of England involved even though we have manchester and leeds.

Durham were basically told by the ECB to invest in their ground to provide test match status.
Then when they went skint on the back of it the ECB relegated them and fined them. And stripped them of test match status.
Same as Glamorgan where the council bailed them out.

That's bollocks. The ECB has plenty of dosh and they should be funding that stuff.
glamorgan are not in england and should never hold test english matches.

Durham to be fair was at least half a stadium of temporary stands. At least Glamorgan and Hampshire’s main stadia have a decent ground with permanent stands.

Tell me where the current ground at Bristol can extend to make it big enough to host test matches? It looks tidy enough but has no real space to expand.

I’ll bite.

It’s the England and Wales Cricket Board. Why shouldn’t Cardiff be involved? If nothing else it’s a fantastic city to visit.

It's not bollocks. It's what happened.
And see the other post about England and Wales cricket, which is why Glamorgan play county games.

i'm saying it's bollocks, as in bad form by the ecb, not bollocks as in it didn't happen.

Tony Lewis was Welsh and captained England.
Mike Denness was Scottish and captained England.
Tony Grieg was South African born and qualified to play for and captain England by virtue of his Scottish parentage.
Douglas Jardine was Indian born and captained England through Scottish parentage.
Good god we’ve even let Yorkshiremen captain England and it doesn’t come much more “foreign country” than that!!!

Len Hutton from Pudsey was the first “professional cricketer” to be appointed England captain in 1952.Prior to that it was the preserve of amateur “gentlemen” who had been educated at Oxford or Cambridge,or prominent private schools like Eton and Harrow. Wally Hammond had previously reverted back to being an “amateur” in order to captain England in 1938. Len Hutton refused to do that but the decision to appoint him as captain was overwhelming.
The MCC didn’t abolish the distinction of “Gentlemen” and “Players” until January 1963. i.e. Douglas Jardine(Winchester College & Oxford) was a “Gentleman” whereas Harold Larwood and Bill Voce were picked in the team as “Players”!

One of the many problems with Durham and Cardiff regarding test matches is the weather.
On previous occasions the weather has tended to be poor when they have been selected to host games.
