it was called the Cattle Market. It was on the corner of the next street up towards town from Walnut street. There was a pub called the Turks Head facing the prison gates as well. The Freemans Arms and the Bedford towards the hospital across the road from Granby Halls main entrance. The Life Boat and the Rifle Butts down Walnut street, think that covers the area dunnit ?

There wasn't a pub on the corner of Hazels street, l think its the Victorian nurses home.

I had been in the Life Boat and the Rifle Butts before I was of legal drinking age. But always on a match day when they were rammed and it was easier to get away with. I remember big fights with the Brummies and with Sunderland around that area late sixties/early seventies!

The lifeboat was in New Bridge Street 😁
was it, l had it in my mind that it was almost next to the Rifle Buts. I'd have only gone in these as a 15 year old, or with my uncle when l was even younger than that so l'm probably slightly off then.

Life Boat and Rifle Butts more or less faced each other either side of the bottom of Chestnut Street and along New Bridge Street. Both pubs were demolished with all the housing in that area in the first half of the seventies to make way for further development of the Royal Infirmary!

l remember the Sunderland one, a lot of house bricks too and fro, from the demoed houses.

It was the Cattle Market that I went in that one time then, bnet. You can still see where that middle main door was for the bars either side. And it’s entrance is still much wider than the other terrace homes along there!

I think a couple of the terraced houses near where the pub was are now the Relate Counselling Services!

There was another Rifle Butts (with an ‘s’) on Nottingham Road also long ago demolished. Next to Life Boat was Rifle Butt (without an ‘s’). It has led to confusion on here before!

Been in that one up the Highfields a few times '70's and maybe '80's. Looks like my memory isn't that good, l could have swore the R B's and the Lifeboat where close to each other facing towards Filbert street way, l can almost see one of them and would have said they were on Walnut street the side of St Andrews houses. Seems not though !

been there, had a fucking row in front of the councillor, so it didn't help. Prior to that, my misses made an appointment to see another marriage counsellor there but she went on her own, she never said if it helped her or not but she definitely still had the hump, so probably not !

Sometimes in the seventies after a home match we would head to the Burlington on Guthlaxton Street with Sylvester “Cat” Constance and his mates, before we got a later train back to Hinckley. Also the Spinney Hill and even the Ravi Club a couple times too!

you got me doubting myself there mate, as l had the wrong street with the RB and LB. l had to check the Cattle Market, it was number 53 Aylestone Road which appears to be the hospikal car park now and would be where l thought it was.

I always wondered why it was called the Cattle Market when it weren't near the actual cattle market !

The building on the corner of Hazel street does look like it could have been a pub but I'm pretty sure it wasn't.

It’s sometimes difficult to remember back just how much that area has changed since back then. What’s left of New Bridge Street is truncated before it reaches Walnut Street now. Did it carry on nearer what is now Havelock Street or veer more through the St. Andrews housing to remember exactly where the R.Butt and Lifeboat were. What year did the Turnstile (F Bar) first appear with the bookies and the butchers shop?

I’m still pretty sure that was a pub at one time but like I say I would only have been in there just the one time.If it is now that flat conversion it would have been done late seventies very early eighties. It is very distinctly different looking from the rest of the terraced houses along there. Doesn’t matter much now and I shan’t be losing too much sleep over it. Interesting to think back though. As so often happens on here we lost the original Tigers thread somewhat!

New bridge street was the main route to walk into the city centre from the ground and used to hit Oxford street between what is the LRI maturity hospital and the LRI old main entrance and I'm sure it was in line that ran all the way to the Leccy Board cricket ground side entrance. Stopped going that way when we started going up the station after matches.

Could be miles wrong, me heads fucked now days it seems !!
