Bobby Roberts

Don't know how old he is now and his legs are an odd shape but I see him most days off on his walks, obviously still in good shape well apart from tbe legs 😄

See Peter Welsh quite regularly on Knighton Park fag in hand nice guy used to see Alan Woolett also but he's riddled with Parkinson's now so don't get out his son David who looks just like him now walks the dog

Walking into Anstey this morning.
Sure he could still do a job.
I regular see him walking to Beaumont Leys.

About 10 years ago my Boss played golf with him at Lingdale, Bobby walked from Anstey to Lingdale, played 18 holes and then walked back to Anstey.

Bobby, signed from Motherwell for around £40000, was another of the talented Scottish players signed in the '60's and discovered by a scouting system that provided McLintock, Gibson, Sinclair, Manley & Sweenie as well. In later decades McAllister and Mauchlen were found north of the border and were great signings.

Whereas nowadays the standard of Scottish players is atrocious.

John Sjoberg signed from amateur club Banks O’Dee and made his first team debut in October 1960. 413 appearances until 1973 when he left for Rotherham.
Add Billy McDerment 1961-67,
Hugh McIlmoyle 1960-62,
Max Dougan 1963-66.
And the legendary Jimmy Walsh who came from Celtic, earlier,in 1956 and played for us until 1964 (176 appearances,80 goals).
Jimmy Goodfellow (signed from Third Lanark) 1963-67…98 appearances,26 goals.
Billy Hodgson (from Sheffield United) 1963-65….46 appearances,10 goals.
Willie Bell (from Leeds United) 1967-69….49 appearances.

Dominic “Nick” Sharkey (signed from Sunderland) 1966-68 ,only 6 first team appearances but scored 5 goals. Mostly used scoring for fun in the reserves alongside Jimmy Goodfellow. The pair of them formed a similar partnership playing for Mansfield.

It was Bobby Roberts'debut match for us and I was on the bus back to the centre (lazy sod). A chap near me shouted down the bus
'What about the new lad, Arthur?' The shout came back, 'Never be a footballer, his legs are too thin'...

Just stood and had a chat with Bobby on anstey 'reccy' while watching the junior football a thoroughly lovely bloke,85 and still as sharp as a tack and still getting out on his walks
One of my first City heroes.

I had the pleasure of refereeing a City team that he managed back when he was an assitant manager to Pleat if memory serves me right. It was at Huntingdon, the night they opened their floodlights and they sent over a really strong team captained by Ali Maulchin.. I was given the appointment by Hunts FA as they were aware who I supported. What an honour in my reffing career!!! Still remember talking to Bobby after the game and telling him I was a big fan of his and he remarked you must be older than you look then son if you rember my playing days.!

I was lucky enough to speak to Bobby when he was the assistant to Pleat and City played a pre season match at Hitchin Town. I too mentioned I was a fan of his and he laughed at how old I was to remember him

Ian “Chalky” White another midfield player we bought in from Scotland from 1958-1962. 47 League apps,(54 including Cup games), 1 goal. Lost out after Frank McLintock established himself in the first team. Did pick up a 2nd Division runners up promotion medal,(65-66), after he was transferred to Southampton (62-67) as Saints gained their first ever spell in the First Division. Again vying for starts with Ken Wimshurst. Was released in 1967 after Saints signed fellow-Scotsman Hugh Fisher.
Settled on the South Coast running a Sports shop in Totton. Still knocking on at the age of 89.
