8th January 1989
In the Kegworth, Leicestershire Air Crash 47 people were killed and over 80 injured when a British Midland Boeing 737-40, G-OBME, jet crashed on the M1 motorway. Remarkably nobody travelling on the motorway was hurt. The aircraft had developed a problem in its left engine shortly after it took off from Heathrow. The pilots mistakenly believed that the fault was in the right hand engine which they shut down, leading to the crash, just yards from the runway of East Midlands Airport.
 
A near neighbour of mine is a pathologist. He was involved in an autopsy on an old couple, who died on the plane. They were found, sat upright in their seats, holding hands. Strange thing was, no cause of death could be found, no physical damage, no heart attack, etc. Very strange.

What was the verdict, Covid?
 
A guy I worked with at BA was one of the crew on that flight. He was, in his own words very lucky, but survived. I remember quite clearly where I was when I heard about it on the radio.
 
A mates uncle was in one of the first fire crews on the scene. 20 plus years in the service. Things he saw broke him, never the same man again. Awful tragedy which could have been much worse with fatalities amongst motorway traffic. RIP.
 
I think I saw it pass over my house in Barwell, I remember it being a lot lower than usual, we were smack on the flight path for Southern planes starting their descent. I remember clearly that we sat watching London's Burning when there was a news flash
