50 years ago today!

I can’t believe this is that long ago. My mate and I were there behind the goal. Anyone else?
So yes 50 years ago today we played at Luton in the 5th round of the FA Cup. They were in the old 2nd division, going well and would be promoted that season. A difficult match on paper. They also had our old player Rodney Fern up front who bless him , was still only 23 but looked 45!
It turned out to be a rout and one of our best displays in years. The late great Malcolm Allison described it as good an away performance he’d ever seen ( I think that’s correct?).
Great display, a packed Leicester end and one of my all time favourite Leicester goals scored by the mercurial Keith Weller.
For our younger readers here’s the match. Enjoy.

Great to watch it again and I was also behind the goal.
A couple of observations I noted
7 of the 8 cup games on a Saturday afternoon
5 top flight fixtures played as well
You are lucky if any FA Cup games are played at 3pm on a Saturday.

Does anyone remember the actual Malcolm Allison comment. I think he went into the dressing room afterwards to congratulate the team

I was stood along the side in front of the main stand. Amazing performance on the usual heavy pitch of that time of year back then.

I remember Eric Morecambe being interviewed on 'Sports Report ' on the radio after the game, congratulating City and saying they played superb and deserved the win... very gracious he was thinking back.

The first 30 secs are great!
The state of the pitch, the ref getting clocked on the back of head, the Fern kicking the floor instead of the ball and going flying... marvellous stuff.

I was there. And also at the Division 2 game prior to it in 1971 at Easter which we won 3-1. Ally Brown,John Farrington and Malcolm Manley scored the goals but Rodney Fern destroyed Luton that day playing in a more deep lying attacking role in probably his finest ever performance for us. We were promoted as Division 2 Champions that season.
On a footnote to this my mate Griff had just escaped from Norwich prison and went to the game while he was on the run. He was arrested that day and charged with threatening behaviour then released. (No high tech Police data back then). He was out hiding for a further month but then eventually gave himself up like most absconders do. He had to wear a sort of high vis harlequin style prison uniform when they got him back as an “escapee” and not allowed any visitors!

I remember Rodney when he played for us. Was often more on the floor than standing up!!

Great day out that was with big brother Seamus, I was still at school but had a few pints, I’ve still not stopped pissing for fecks sake… 😳

I was there with my brother and two mates down the side under the main stand, still remember that goal of Wellers. Then next stop QPR and Jo Waters👍👍

The Easter '71 game...loads of us had been slung out by the cops for scrapping in the Oak Rd. End.
Eventually the cops let us go...couldn't get back in the Luton end so went in the opposite open end.Sure I remember Click being in there for the 2nd half.Happy days

I was there too in the open end behind the goal. Didn't have a ticket and turned up on spec to buy one from a tout which I did at face value. Slightly deflated when they made the 6th round draw just after the game and we got QPR away as they were a top team then. Went to that game too which was probably an even better performance.

Also went to the 71 game standing in the paddock in front of the main stand. Malvolm McDonald completely tamed by Sjoberg and Cross. T Rex were TOTP with Hot Love. That's what we all have.

Yes I was there, unfortunately I was at university in Southampton, so when all the city fan's went 1 way for the coaches and trains I had to go the other way, very tasty!!!

went both of them Luton games, thousands of us there both times. We knew these games were always gonna be fun days out because my mates who didn't really like football would go.

… and I was there as a fifteen year old. Only the 15/16 team rivals this one as the best Leicester team of my lifetime. They were inconsistent but when Weller and Worthington were on it they were bloody fantastic. This game and the one three weeks later at QPR are still two of the best City performances I have ever seen. Brilliant times.
