A Charm of Goldfinches come to our garden every day from October to March. The Sunflower hearts draw them in every winter - very nutritious. We have a fox that turns up fairly regularly, Mrs AFC puts out a few bits for him. Turned up the other day with a 'friend', both fully grown but still fairly youthful.
Both looked in good shape, wary but not skittish, given the time of year I wondered if they were 'on a date'.
Mrs AFC's current project is a group (8-9) of what we think are Goldfinches hanging around outside, she is busy researching appropriate food for them and thinking about where we can put some nesting boxes.

Goldies never use nest boxes.

We are no experts in any of these matters, I assumed they were blue tits, we have those too. We are pretty sure these are goldfinches, as you say pretty distinctive and are wonderful to see. If we can find space we shall put up some boxes anyway, the tits will like them so they will probably get used.Thistles & nettles are a lure for goldies, too.
But as they are so distinctive, what else did you think they may be?
