Are the variant names being changed?

We had the 'Kent' variant, 'South Africa' variant etc etc, now I notice the media are calling the 'India' variant the 'Delta' variant.
Perhaps they are going to work through the alphabet , so the next variant will be 'Echo'

When we get to Omega we are doomed.
I think they made a mistake using the Greek alphabet . Only 24 letters and some of them unpronounceable .
Maybe they should have named them after leaders in countries that have fucked it it up ?
The Johnson variant
The Trump variant
etc ?

Or they could adopt plus/minus like the old academic marking schemes (beta-plus etc). Should sit well with the PM and his fellow Oxbridge alumni.

Given his fondness of Latin I am surprised he opted for Greek.

He did both at university I assume. But the reclassification was WHO decision wasn't it?

The Kent Variant is apparently known as The English Variant outside the UK.

It's fairly straight forward, it's to prevent knuckleheads from blaming a region and then attacking people from that region.
Here in the US, Asian-americans (india, chinese, japanese, pacfic islanders etc), have been targeted in hate crimes (getting beaten up on the street whilst having racial slurs shouted at them) due to trump calling covid the 'china virus'.
